The Duke Housing / Acton Ostry Architects

June 8, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

In recent years, the City of Vancouver introduced housing policies to address current and future needs for housing affordability and choice in the ever-evolving urban environment. The new policies allow strategically located sites to be rezoned to permit greater height and density in exchange for developers committing to provide and operate rental housing for a period of 60 years or for the life of the building. The Duke responds to these challenges with a new rental building typology inspired by precedents from the UK. The Duke is a 14-storey mixed-use development with 12-storeys of residential rental accommodation located above a two-storey commercial podium. The unit mix comprises 25% two-bedroom family units with one-bedroom and studio units making up the balance.

The new design of Berlin’s Impact Hub provides a platform for innovation and society in which people work together across cultures and generations. Like a second skin, the interior design of the new Impact Hub Berlin slots into the existing space of the building designed by Werner Düttmann in the 1960s on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. The design reflects the corporate philosophy of the Impact Hub Berlin as a co-working space and start-up centre for start-ups in the field of social entrepreneurship. It acts as a catalyst at the intersection of innovation and society, enabling people to work together.

Recycling five buildings and a garden. The El Til·ler – Linden Tree- School is carefully inserted into a large, mature and abandoned private garden, in the garden suburb of Bellaterra, close to Barcelona. The complex is articulated along the existing main access path, which becomes a “rambla” -the Mediterranean name for high street- that ends at a square which opens to the landscape.

3 houses form an ensemble, they are and act as three compositions and fan out into the landscape. the planar shifting of the surface creates directions and axes, directions of existing mountain peaks. the horizontal shifting causes the different elevation on the contour lines and thus also the different perspectives of the three compositions. at the foot of the forest, each positioned on concrete slabs, floating above the topography, above the landscape that flows underneath. the wooden gabled houses seem to become one with the forest because of their dark colour, they integrate themselves into it.

“A man travels the world looking for what he needs and returns home to find it” George Moore. This building, located in the Coghlan neighbourhood of the City of Buenos Aires, begins with the premise of solving a set of multi-family homes and a private house on the same plot. In this framework and following the challenge of reflecting on contemporary living, a proposal that investigates the limits between public and private areas arises. The interior, the exterior and the spaces of transition generate dynamic and participatory relationships.
