San Vicente935 Housing / Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects

June 4, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

This new 7-unit housing project in West Hollywood continues LOHA’s commitment to promoting thoughtful design through an adaptation of the courtyard housing typology. Located on a constrained site on San Vicente Blvd between Santa Monica and Sunset Blvd, this project judiciously reduces its allowable building envelope to maximize open space and provide a large common courtyard. Focused on developing productive new models for added density on small infill sites across the City, this project prioritizes outdoor space, social connectivity, and porosity at the street level.

Prismatic Installation / Hou de Sousa

June 4, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Prismatic is a kaleidoscopic experience of light, color, and space defined by an aggregation of perspectives. Unique on all sides, the piece encourages the public to explore its exterior, as well as meander through its translucent corridors. Iridescent rope weaves between a lattice of rebar, while the gaps between these cords provides transparency and results in a dynamic visual effect known as a moiré. As visitors turn their gaze or walk about the space, patterns in the background and foreground continuously converge and delaminate, warping visual perception and causing static surfaces to appear in flux.

Hollwich Kushner designed this multi-family residential building as a transition between the nearby brownstone neighborhood Hamilton Park and the Newport, a dense section of the city that offers quick access to New York. Red brick ties the building to its context, while its scale responds to the growing demand for living space in this transit-rich neighborhood.

Hotel Gardenazza / SIRS

June 1, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Short. Nestled in the heart of the Italian Dolomites is the recently re-built Hotel Gardenazza. The existing building structure consisted of two parts, the original front dating back to 1939 and a more recent rear extension from the 1990ies. The project scope consisted in replacing the aged 30ies structure with a new 5-storey low-energy building to provide contemporary hotel facilities with a 33 bed capacity as well as meeting current fire and building regulations, which the existing structure was not able to achieve.

House on the bank / Aleksandr Mochalov

June 1, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Architect Alexander Mochalov built this house on the outskirts of St Petersburg, successfully integrating it with the complex local terrain. Truth be told, this is not one house but two. The customer who hired Alexander Mochalov purchased a plot of land on the banks of the Gulf of Finland. Despite it lying on a complex slope, he wanted to preserve the landscape in its natural form. The difference in height from the slopes highest point to its lowest is three and a half metres. For this reason, Mochalov and his colleague Vladimir Smirnov devised the idea of building a larger, main house (250 m2) on the upper section of the plot and a guest house (150m2) ‘one step lower’. “The client wanted a modern, naturalistic design made from wood and stone, where it would be possible to reside comfortably all year-round” says Mochalov.

Tree House / Madeiguincho

May 31, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

We were challenged to design a tree house on a plain of pines and cork oaks. After visiting the site, a young and healthy pine was chosen, on a plateau overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We assumed that the pine would serve as protection for the house and that the project would embrace the tree . Thus, it became natural to chose the material — from the structure to the covering, passing through its interior : pine . The project benefits of a view over the horizon during the day. At night, it favors a zenith view, since there are few other sources of light beyond that of the stars. In this way, the house suggests different experiences throughout the day and change of source of natural light.
