Planes House / Estudio Damero

June 9, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

When designing the renovation of Casa Planes, the challenge was not only the preservation of the built heritage, but also the preservation of the emotional heritage of its owners. Preserving the architectural identity of this typical chorizo house in Buenos Aires led us to enhance the old commercial facade, now projected as access to the new home. Considering the entrance area allowed us to develop the idea of an “urban oasis”: a sequence of patios with differentiated uses that serve as a backdrop for interior living, while suggesting a continuity from the interior to the exterior.

Tibetan Thangka Art Museum / AND Studio

Six years ago, we were invited to participate in the design of a Thangka Art Museum, aiming to house traditional Buddhist Thangka art collections. The site is located at the foot of Penbu Mountain in the southern part of Lhasa, facing the Potala Palace across the Lhasa River. Being away from the core area of Lhasa, the site grants us more design freedom, yet it also presents the challenge of how to innovate while staying true to tradition. We aim for its volume and spiritual essence to be harmoniously unified.

Taquari House / Estúdio Empena

“Sometimes light, sometimes shadow. The body moves as if it could speak on its own. It thanks the pulses of nature for connecting the soul to the sky tinged with colors that choose the horizon, a mantle for all people. Bare feet shrink at the cold touch of the plunge into the waters. And they, so admiring, speak directly to the stars. Sometimes light, sometimes shadow. The body traverses the space in the desire to be. And time becomes a shelter. There is no disguise there for the truth of each path.” Poem by Izabela Brettas

Flying Tops Arenas / People’s Architecture Office

June 6, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The Flying Tops Arenas draw inspiration from the vibrant sport they host, resembling dynamic structures that evoke planes in varied states of motion, hovering above the rolling terrain of rural Yunnan. These arenas serve as the stage for Competitive Top-Spinning, an ancient Chinese sport that holds deep roots within the indigenous communities of the Yunnan area, dating back over 4,000 years.

Los Carlos House / ap22.arq

A beach house for a couple and their 3 teenage children to share with friends in summertime. The seaside resort of Reta is a coastal locality with a sea separated from the town by dunes that were fixed through tamarisks, cortaderas, pampas grass, cat’s claws, and sectors of unfixed dunes that move from the West to the East by the action of the winds. These dunes do not stop their growth in height: as a wild, hard landscape, without the intervention of the hand of man, it becomes a potential of the land. We decided to locate the house preserving nature; the decision not to alter it led us to study the gaps and the best views within the lot. We found an area on the lot far from the only access that in turn enjoyed the best views of the place. This location had, among other advantages, an orientation that protected it from the strong SW winds due to the existence of a grove of trees planted years ago by a neighbor. These winds, which come across from the sea in winter and autumn, bring sand storms from the SW, which reinforce the need to protect the house.
