The design began when I met the architect who decided to build a shopping district house that could solve the two factors: the residence and rental income of the main household (parents and the couple) on a detached house with a garden where I lived with my mother since childhood.
We were awarded the project as part of an invited EOI by Blacktown City Council. The brief called for a robust cricket club and amenities building that could also serve the park and broader community. Our budget was tight, the process protracted and siting options were limited due to stormwater and sewer pipes. Functions were distributed between two adjacent pavilions, the larger housing a function room, canteen and toilets and the smaller housing ‘home’ and ‘away’ change rooms and storage. The pavilions sit side by side, addressing the oval and define an in-between space.

The client wanted to have a variety of conversations with the local people, starting with the story of what kind of ingredients they made, not just giving gelato to customers. Based on the concept of “high-quality everyday life,” the client has been creating a store by carefully examining products such as clothes and other personal items, as well as crafts and products made by artisans, in pursuit of quality products that will last for years. A condominium in the central region of the city of Guaporé, Rio Grande do Sul, in an urban area near a green massif, gives way to the Araucária Residence. The owner of the land was looking for a house that would generate warmth and a sense of belonging. For this, the integration with the context happened naturally. The project’s inspirations were based on the natural elements present, such as the topography represented by a sloping terrain, the insolation, the climate changes of the state, the ventilation, the views, and the respect for the environment.
