the social housing project, TLALPAN 590, is designed as a result of an interesting collaboration between two practices, taller DEA and KOZ architectes. the two young architecture offices, based in mexico and france respectively, joined forces to create an architecture that intends to contribute towards a better future for mexico city.

the vertical neighborhood has been designed by DEA and KOZ to contrast with the massive, mid-rise blocks that occupy the main streets of mexico city. TLALPAN 590 consists of two ultra thin towers, one constructed using red brick and the other is articulated by a white metal mesh. the playful forms of the towers are expressed to reflect the varying layouts of the apartments. in total, 12 different possibilities have been generated for the 52 residential units.
the ground floor is raised above street level to provide a greater degree of privacy and also to generate a commercial space. access to the building is located on the quieter side street. ramps lead down to parking and bicycle storage while a staircase leads up towards the large courtyard bordered by the main staircase and corridors. the courtyard provides natural light and ventilation to the building while creating a shared space for the inhabitants to enjoy.
dubbed by the architects as ‘techno-rustic on a tight budget,’ construction details and finishes blend sophistication with ordinary features to achieve a distinctive character. details such as simple orange paint in the corridors, crafted black metal railings and decorative plants on each floor are utilized to reach this concept. the rendered concrete finish and the rugged dark brown bricks are carefully combined by DEA and KOZ to make TLALPAN 590 settle naturally in the surroundings of mexico city.
