Flying-Bird Pavilion / TJAD Original Design Studio

Flying-Bird Pavilion is located between Wu Zhen Road Bridge and Xin Zha Road Bridge at the southern bank of Su Zhou River. It is built upon the roof of a half-underground equipment office. There is a small piazza before the platform. It thus makes the site top of this waterfront space. When we first arrived here, standing on the platform, the Suzhou River flows quietly from the foot. We looked around and had an impressive view. Therefore, it is a favorable design condition to retain the original structure of the equipment office as well as the original site height. There was a tensile membrane structure Pavilion on the platform, and four inclined steel columns passed through the roof of the structure to connect the underground foundation. As a landscape sketch of waterfront space, the original film structure pavilion has poor retention, and its volume is not enough to become the space background of a small piazza, and it is difficult to meet the requirements of “commanding height” for recognition.

Meson Pavilion / TJAD Original Design Studio

Meson Pavilion is located inside Huangpu Park at No.76 South Suzhou Road. It is opposite to Shanghai Mansion across the river to the north and next to the former site of Regatta Club to the south. The design of Meson Pavilion is originated from an unexpected ‘archaeological’ opportunity: the rediscovery of steel box bridge pier left by the dismantling of Wu Song Road Gate Bridge in 2009. This reinforced concrete pier with a geometrical shape on the site reflects a special period of urban history. We decide to make use of this pier to stimulate the site memory and involve it in a contemporary dialogue of the place.

Shiroka is a fishing village located on the shores of Shkodra Lake, near the border with Montenegro. Its inhabitants lived for centuries from the lake, men fishing with small rowboats and women tending orchards and weaving carpets by hand. The reaction to the end of a communist regime that had deprived citizens of living from traditional “private” activities was widespread mistrust in the public sphere, which led to a period characterized by uncontrolled occupation and privatization of public space. As result, the public space of the waterfront of Shkodra lake was occupied with illegal constructions such as private houses, restaurants, private parking areas, and kiosks. “Albanian Carpet” returns the waterfront to the citizens demolishing the illegal constructions, opening the views over the lake, and creating an alive public space with a domestic character.

Sjøholt is a small town in beautiful Sunnmøre in the western part of Norway. This town has a rich history and has for several centuries been a connection between land and sea. When tourists came here at the beginning of the 20th century, the historical city center developed into a vibrant place. Time passed and modernist city planning ruined the vibrant city center with a highway. Nowadays the municipality of Ørskog has taken action in revitalizing the city center, and especially the waterfront. Lykta is a tiny intervention, but it has the effect that the public can discover the waterfront in a new way. It marks the beginning of the newly-built environment by the harbor. Lykta is a new public space placed on the edge of Sjøholt, where the city center meets Storfjorden.

Concept. Politically, Sennhof belongs to the city of Winterthur, but geographically the suburb is clearly separated from the city area and forms a village exclave in the valley of the Töss. The river not only shapes the topography, it also aligns the elements of the settlement in the direction of flow: Buildings, road, railway line, forest edges. This also applies to the buildings and open spaces of the new Oberzelg settlement, which is squeezed between the cantonal road and the railway line.

By engaging all senses to define the experience and stories of space, a unique project was being established. The urban solution approach, for the public square and contemporary designed modular kiosks in the Baroque historic city in Varaždin, ought to emphasize and preserve the identity on-site, and at the same time promote sustainability and local craftsman production. The project aims to highlight a new design, for an existing public square in the historical fabric of the city; while formating a functional and inspiring gathering point for tourists and strengthening the educational character. Over the years, this area has undergone a transformation and has become an important craftsman location. In order to emphasize its purpose and attractiveness, the newly designed solution offers a sensitive approach that would nurture and preserve the current spatial identity. And, still offering new possibilities, better presentation space for the local craftsmen, and public space that is flexible and adaptive to various occasions and events.

Guðlaug baths rest in the rock barrier of Langisandur Beach, facing the vast North Atlantic Ocean. They are a testament to the positive effect a single architectural intervention can have, as they enable and encourage interaction with the ocean and the elements. Guðlaug is a free entry, democratic, public space, and a community favourite. Guðlaug has also played a role in strengthening the image of the township and attracts scores of visitors from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík (40 min away) as well as tourists, with a positive effect on the local economy.
