Urban Renewal of Chiado Neighborhood / Álvaro Siza + Carlos Castanheira

January 13, 2021 Pilar Caballero 0

Álvaro Siza’s restoration project for the pedestrian routes connecting one of the courtyards of the Carmo Convent (Patio B), Largo do Carmo square, and the Carmo Terraces has been going on for over two decades. It seems that recovery plans only happen when there is a catastrophe. The restoration of the Chiado area, due to a fire in 1988, has been gradually implemented, and some buildings that were destroyed, and others that were left intact, still required renovation, like so many others outside the area.

The projects brief was to plan a new entrance gate to the Technion (I.I.T – Israel institute of technology) located in Haifa, Israel. A gate that will represent the Technion’s values of Excellence and Innovation and will ensure safe & controlled entry process. Our project links between two existing but disconnected promenades– the first arrives from the city (ends next to the gate) and the second departs near the entry gate inside the campus towards the campus historic center. The project offers a new interpretation to the idea of a “Gate” – not a brier or a separator but as a bridge that connects the city and the campus through a green promenade.

Succulents Museum Public Space / Estudio de Arquitectura MAGICARCH + Enrique Nieto + Antonio Abellán + Verbestudio

October 10, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

The museum of cacti and succulents is an architecture that emerges from an agile and light way of acting in the city supported by the strategy of ‘urban acupuncture’, which allows us to create a new urban garden in the city of Murcia more quickly. This new garden is obtained by connecting a redundant car island to a pedestrian zone. Thus, from a residual space in the city where garbage was stored, a new pedagogical garden is obtained, an open-air museum of succulents that contributes to the decrease of electrosmog and electro-pollution while allowing children to discover the succulent species from all over the planet.
