“At first I was enchanted by off-grid living. But the hardships quickly became apparent”

"At first I was enchanted by off-grid living," says Marcus Field. "But the hardships quickly became apparent"

Marcus Field spent six years in an off-grid home. With architecture’s contribution to carbon emissions in the spotlight and children striking against climate change, he asks if climate activists are prepared for the sacrifices needed to live sustainably. There have been many low points during my long journey as an accidental climate-change warrior. I’ve lived

Bressanella Agricultural Pavilion is located in Besana, in Brianza, which is one of the most densely populated areas in Italy and Europe, where land has been consumed to commercial and residential uses at sky-high rates. In this context, a small farm has yet decided to bet on sustainable and ethical values, against mainstream trends being part of the Short Food Supply Chain thus enabling a closer relationship between producers and consumers. Therefore the key concepts of the project are state-of-the-art technology, sustainability, and a “short” production-consumption configuration.

Bike Parking Design Guidelines

April 6, 2019 Eduardo Souza 0

Studies show that public investment in integrated and safe cycling networks promotes urban transformation, providing more humanity, health and quality of life in urban spaces. While cities in the Netherlands and the Nordic countries have already incorporated bicycles into daily life, with a significant portion of the population using the means of transport for daily commutes, much of the world is still seeking a model to reduce congestion and increase its use. According to the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), investing in non-motorized transport allows congestion reduction, improves air quality, physical and mental health of residents, and local trade and brand visibility, once that cyclists tend to pay more attention to local commerce and take up less space than cars.

The Black House / Buero Wagner

Rural areas in Germany are often characterized by urban sprawl, faceless villages and generic detached houses. This is especially the case for the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee, which lies inside Munich metropolitan region. A contrast is formed by a small black house that stands out from its surroundings solely on account of its carbonized facade. Unlike typical detached homes it is located between two existing houses an office building and a multifamily home. And although it directly adjoins the latter it does consciously distinguish itself from its setting, so that it is perceived as an independent building. In this manner, a further element is added to the existing heterogeneous ensemble.

Germina Foundation is an organization that works with children and young people at risk of social exclusion, caring for them, monitoring and reinforcing their education, and providing educational support for their training and future entry into the labor market. This monitoring process, which aims to build a bond by engaging participants through complementary programs from the moment they arrive as young children up until their entry into the workforce, needed to have a space where it could accommodate its three key age groups in three areas that could be either connected or independent. The program for the building also had to house the organization’s administrative staff. Improving the neighborhood’s social fabric, community action, and collaboration with local organizations through workshops, courses, and other social activities are also among the foundation’s aims.
