Situated on a slip of land between Sams Creek inlet and the Atlantic Ocean, the home design for a young family comprises intersecting layers of transitional indoor-outdoor spaces and generous expanses of glazing that filter sunlight and views through its interiors.
On a windy and exposed site, nestled behind a hill, sits a metal clad nugget; a home for a gold prospector and his family. Taking material and spatial cues from miner’s cottages and the country shed vernacular, this is a small house on a large rural block. Surrounded by pastoral rolling fields on the fringes of a state forest and proximate to a rich history of Victoria’s Gold Rush, the site is vast yet humble. The compact form was inspired by the client’s desire for retreat, and at under 100 square meters and for less than $260,000, was achieved for a similarly modest budget.
On a site that faces the main thoroughfare of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Deborah Berke Partners designed this new residence hall at Dickinson College to present a formal front to the street and a more casual face to a lawn (and future quadrangle) to the south. Stone facades on the public side provide a modern interpretation of the stone of the historic Dickinson campus across the street.
The municipality of Sint-Katelijne-Waver required a building consisting of a multipurpose hall, as well as a daycare centre and a small library. The building has a footprint of more than 1.800 m2, situated on a plot of just 3.500 m2. In order to realize a building as compact as possible, the multipurpose hall is situated in the centre of the site.
Ingenhoven Architects is building the Kö-Bogen II office block in Düsseldorf, which will have facades covered with five miles-worth of hornbeam hedges. Located on the Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, alongside the heritage-listed Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus theatre, the five-storey office block topped out earlier this month. Both houses sits in a very open terrace with a gentle topography, surrounded by trees overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the white sandy beach of Playa Hermosa.
The need to substantially reduce our impact on the planet must be translated into a significant change to our lifestyle and habits. One of these is to consume responsibly and consider that waste does not exist, but that all material can be transformed into something useful again following a circular ecological system.
