Quinta da Ria Renovation / AIA

January 17, 2021 Pilar Caballero 0

The Quinta da Ria project is the first renovation phase of the different areas of a golf course with the same name, located in Algarve, on the sea shore looking towards the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic Ocean. This phase included the renovation of the “clubhouse”, the main building where the offices, the store, the reception and the restaurant are located, also redoing the surrounding landscape with the creation of a large terrace. The building was hidden in the middle of a dense vegetation of no interest, with no definition on how to approach and access the building, presenting very dark and poorly lit interiors, being noisy, with too many different materials and too full of objects.

Middle West Spirits / Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design

January 12, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

Middle West Spirits operated their artisan small batch distillery business from a 10,000 square foot, 1920’s era historic warehouse structure in a quickly gentrifying urban neighborhood of Columbus for several years before deciding to expand. Their plans to increase their capacity required new distillery equipment, including stills of 50 feet and 35 feet in height and several large mashing tanks, as well as a public tasting room, bottle shop and offices. To accommodate this equipment, a center portion of the original steel bow truss and wood roof was removed and a new 50 foot tall, tiered steel structure was inserted over new foundations below.

Background and site. An art hotel settlement in the Nankun mountain national forest park. Starting from the site and tradition, a new picture is established, which contains memory and points to future imagination. The project is located in a valley 800 meters above sea level in Nankun Mountain National Forest Park. There are 5 original brick-wood structure holiday villas built in the 90s in the place, with a very low-density layout to balance the relationship between architecture and nature. As a public space, the new building needs to carry activities such as art exhibition, brand launch, catering, and gathering, as a generator of multiple functions.
