Modification of the terrace house in the inner suburb of Melbourne is a continuity of space exploration after family occupancy. The project aims to reflect and celebrate the previously designed ‘Studio Garage Façade’ by incorporating the polycarbonate sheeting into the roof and ceiling of the living and kitchen area, opening onto the backyard, and forming a pergola. The moments created through innovative roofing are an exciting journey to be taken on and shared by the clients. The angled polycarbonate roofing combined with an open plan of the residence’s corridor through to the backyard visually connects the indoors to the outdoors. The project’s open plan was made possible by relocating the kitchen and deleting the corridor in between the living and the backyard area where the kitchen bench joinery extending to the living area and the backyard transforms into shelves and a BBQ bench respectively, to create a fluid connection of spaces. The materiality of the joinery pays a tribute to the steel from the existing staircase designed in the 1990s and the family‐crafted timber bookshelves.

A heritage from the recent past. A family inherited from their grandfather a house in the Perche region in Normandy. The building was situated in a clearing in the middle of a wonderful forested area. Even so, the family was attached to the existing house, they didn’t really know what to do it.

The expansion of the Clara Resort in Ibiúna, Sao Paulo state, began in September 2019 with the challenge of creating a project that camouflages in the topography of the land and harmonizes with the existing buildings in the hotel. In an area of more than 20,000m² (65,617sq. ft.) in a privileged location of the land, 15,000m² (49,212sq. ft.) of built area were planned with new suites, swimming pool, restaurant, bar, games, bowling and a building dedicated to corporate and social events.

Imagine if your home could feel like living in a garden pavilion. At BENT Annexe II, it does! By retaining the character-rich front section of the home and creating a new, light-filled addition to the rear, this family of four plus Pippa the groodle are surrounded by lush greenery and can effortlessly utilize their backyard. As is the case with many period homes, the existing house was charming with high ceilings and ornate details. As is also the case with many period homes, the living areas felt disconnected from the backyard due to a series of rooms, such as the kitchen, storage rooms, and a toilet which were tacked onto the back in a lean-to. We resisted the temptation to knock down the lean-to and add a new open-plan living area stretching from boundary to boundary to the back and opening onto the garden for two key reasons.

A pianist asked us to imagine a space entirely dedicated to music, where she can practice and teach: a quiet and magical space as an integral part of her beautiful garden in the Swiss town of Winterthur.   The single-story music pavilion stands on a simple concrete base. Both, the walls and the pitched roof, are constructed with 12cm thick cross-laminated timber panels – almost like a cardboard model. The steep gable roof rests on both ends of the walls and floats along the eaves in order to completely open the room towards the garden.

Convent House is the extension of a 1900 house between party walls in Sabadell, Barcelona. The existing building was a two-storey house with an overbuilt courtyard. The intervention preserves the street façade and the Catalan vault on the ground floor. The rest is emptied with the aim of growing in height and reducing the building’s footprint by freeing up as much space as possible in the courtyard.

The commercial building, constructed in 1978, is located in the municipality of Zollikon on the shore of Lake Zurich. It is flanked by the Seestrasse to the west and the railway tracks to the east. The building, which dates from the late 1970s, is being renovated and a full story is added to the overall volume. In addition, two stories inside the building will be converted into a kindergarten as part of the renovation.
