Refugio Hachi is a project located in the rural area of the Villarrica commune in southern Chile. It is situated on a plot with abundant native forest and, with the aim of preserving the existing trees and making the most of the light and heat, it was decided to locate the project in the only available clearing. The client, a jeweler, wanted a refuge that not only served as her home, but also as a place to design and work. The design of this space had to meet the following requirements: thermal efficiency, comfort, spaciousness, illumination, and views of the native forest.

June 10, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

In Pride of Idleness, one of the winning designs was crafted with circular design principles in mind. The design concept was to open a discussion in the architectural profession, on taking pride and liberation of “taking a rest” from work while honoring Pride Month.

The house was designed for a family that wanted privacy and to be isolated from the outside noise. We generated simple volumes to let spatiality be the main protagonist in this project. Therefore, the facades became very silent to the road, framing perfectly the tree and garden at the house entrance.

Due to the pedagogical success of the Marianum, a private Catholic school, an annex was needed to accommodate additional educational facilities. Additional classrooms, administrative offices, and teachers’ rooms for about 170 students and 20 teachers were needed to augment the all-day school’s learning and living space. The position and dimensions of the new, elongated two-story building are directly related to the existing building from 2009, which LRO had designed as part of the extension of an existing old building into the Marianum.

Selenite Dreams Installation / BUREAU

May 31, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

Plaster, the extracted form of gypsum, essentially composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, appears as a good figuration of the BUREAU’s general attitude towards architecture. If we were to define ourselves as minor architects, following Jill Stoner’s book «Towards a minor architecture», working with what is considered a minor material seems quite d’à-propos. It is one that has been utilized to prefigure and anticipate masterpieces in the numerous “galéries des plâtres” around the world, fabricating figurative positive molds of definite sculptures, forever “graved in stone”. The plaster seems more malleable, elastic, and fragile.

They immediately found themselves in the decor of the Queen Astrid Park on the back of the plot, and in the house itself which was characterized by a fairly wide facade and high ceilings. The lady of the house has a passion for greenery and plants. This fact was translated into the design and the greenery forms an inseparable part of the house.
