Nestled away in the Kootenay mountain range, a compact ski cabin brings family members together and connects them to the boundless surrounding natural landscape.

The concept for an unusual self-build project – the brainchild of Swedish architect Emelie Holmberg, situated in unspoiled woodland on the island of Väddö, Sweden – grew out of a realization of changing living and working patterns partly precipitated by the pandemic. Pre-Covid, Emelie had dreamt of a more flexible lifestyle facilitated by technology, allowing her to work remotely wherever she chose, so long as she had internet access.
The simple form of the house is close to traditional farmhouses in Sweden. It is situated on an island in Stockholm Archipelago. You can only reach it by boat. The rather modest house can still provide social interaction as well as privacy for guests and family.
The project is based on an investment analysis in a piece of land located at a quick access point to the Buenos Aires – La Plata highway, in front of the Roca railway tracks. The maximum performance of the lot allowed by the current ordinance was sought, which allowed the incorporation of three houses and a store.
Reflecting the old and announcing the new, a glazed walkway links three distinct 16th-century dwelling spaces, shifting from reflection to translucency as the day progresses from morning to night.
The house is designed for a family of four people. The irregular outer form of the building is determined by the shape of the plot and the respective border distances. A clear rectangle is inscribed in this irregular form, which corresponds to the heated interior living space; on the valley and mountainsides, inner courtyards are located in front of the living space.
Spices enhance, aromatize, flavor, preserve, heal, improve digestibility, expel pests, mask inherent odors and tastes, ranging from spicy to mild, are pure or mixed, are made of all kinds of plants and their parts or minerals, are colorful, exotic, create a sense of long-distance excitement, polarize, are preserved and were even a means of payment – in short, it is hard to beat the world of spices in terms of richness, opulence, and intensity in all possible manifestations, colors and consistencies.
Visits to the bakery live in the memory of all Mexicans. The smell of freshly baked bread, the company of that loved one who opens the door for you and hands you a pair of tongs to select your favorite piece. A world so big that it does not fit in a single tray and has to be visited regularly. A world that accompanies you to school or work in the form of a bolillo, or in that cake that you enjoy with your grandfather over hot chocolate.
The project consists of the interior reform of a house in the Barcelona neighborhood of Les Corts. It is a district with its own character that does not follow the orthogonal grid of the expansion of the city. It is a house with a square floor plan, it faces west and has two facades, one facing the street and the other facing the interior patio.
House Be is an experiment in dwelling in and amongst nature is the central theme. A rhythmic structure in concrete, wood, and brick contrasts with the frivolity of the restored landscape. In a similar way to the Romantic motif from the 19th-century arts, an attempt was made to create a sensitive tension between a sublime natural landscape and the human presence in it.
