The assignment consisted of the development of an apartment building for sale in a predominantly residential area of the commune of Providencia. To increase density, the regulations allow for an isolated volume of up to 12 floors without allowing housing on the first floor.
The existing apartment, measuring 85 sqm, is the result of the division into two a large apartment with two opposed façades to Enric Granados Street and a generous interior courtyard in the Ensanche Derecho of Barcelona. The outcome of the division distorted the original flat, which enjoyed its access at its center. Now, the access is located at the interior end of the apartment, driving the natural flow towards the exit to a spacious interior gallery room overlooking the big interior courtyard. The existing flooring, consisting of a rich variety of ‘nolla’ mosaics with drawings and colors of great value, was preserved.

In the neighborhood of Torre Baró in Barcelona, at the lower part of the Collserola mountain range allowing the geographical exit from the north of the city, two very different urban fabrics converge as a result of the intersection between landscape and infrastructure: On one hand, a suburban area with largely “self-constructed” houses that climb the slope, seeking places with gentler topography and allowing the continuity of nature through their interstices. On the other hand, a new urban fabric consisting of mostly affordable housing blocks and facilities that, in contact with the city’s exit routes, penetrate the neighborhood by taking advantage of the more accessible paths built over small watercourses.
In this project, I renovated an apartment for a young couple and their newborn child. I was involved from the stage of selecting the property, and in the end, the clients settled on an apartment with a unique layout: in comparison to 70 square meters of indoor space, there was a 35 square meter backyard. The building is located in a so-called “commuter town,” and its surrounding area is dotted by parks, large and small. For a couple about to begin raising a child, these environmental factors played an important role in their choice.
The project is located in an area that has been undergoing a process of transformation and consolidation in recent years. It joins two previous projects of the studio in the same area, defining the character of the neighborhood.

How to transform two regular building blocks into an attractive living environment for young starters and students? A twofold challenge. Housing corporation De Key was looking for a way to break open the classic urban planning plan for two closed building blocks and turn it into a vibrant community, housing approximately 1200 starters and students.
