Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron built the Jade Signature tower at an angle on Miami Beach to minimise shadow on the eastern side and increase the amount of direct sun ocean-facing residences receive.

The 57-storey tower, which tapers towards its top, is encased by a white concrete cage that forms terraces for residents to enjoy Florida’s sunny climate.

“Seen together, the walls and slabs – primary elements in the tower’s architecture – create a finely textured expression on the facade,” said Herzog & de Meuron.

Marking the first condominium project in the United States by Bjarke Ingels’ architecture firm, Grove at Grand Bay comprises a pair of glass high-rises with twisted bases.

“Coconut Grove is a special place with a well-defined soul, so it was important that Grove at Grand Bay respond to its community through a design that was respectful and distinctive,” Ingels said.

The towers are emphasised by overhanging floor plates that create balconies to offer residents views of the surroundings, including Biscayne Bay. They also shade the floors below from sunlight.

One Thousand Museum, Miami by Zaha Hadid Architects

The 62-storey One Thousand Museum, which is located in Downtown Miami on Biscayne Boulevard, marks one of the last buildings that Zaha Hadid worked on before she died suddenly in 2016.

Typical to Hadid’s style, the skyscraper is detailed with curvaceous and sinuous forms. Glass facades are encased by a glass-fibre-reinforced concrete “exoskeleton”. It curves at the corners of the building to form balconies on the lower levels and traces sinuous lines higher up.
