DESIGN CHALLENGE

On June 12, 2016 the largest and deadliest act of violence affecting LGBTQ+ people, and one of the deadliest terrorist attacks by a single gunman in modern American history occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. A total of 49 people’s lives were taken that night, 68 others were injured, and hundreds were left permanently affected from the trauma.

Recycling is a big issue in the Netherlands today. A large proportion of the building stock is vacant, awaiting renovation or re-allocation, including premises with unsuspected qualities just waiting for people with initiative who can spot this potential. So too this steel plant on Rotterdam’s Piekstraat; not an obvious location for an office, but enjoying a unique position with views over the river Maas. What made the building attractive to IMd was the vast space, dominated by an imposing steel structure.

The key parameters behind the design of this house have been the views and proximity to the water, as well as the desire for a property that can elevate and enhance the joys of everyday life.

Unlike a conventional boxy approach, our toilet design challenges the boundary between public and private space by bringing in natural surroundings (e.g. sunlight) into the washroom while maintaining a sense of privacy to optimize user experience.

Nash Tiny House / archimania

Nash Tiny House serves as a weekend home for a couple while visiting their daughter in college. The house is located on unused family property outside of Starkville, MS, and is sited in the exact location as a fishing trailer that belonged to the client’s father. This location takes advantage of a natural clearing in the pines and offers western views of the pond.
