b l a n k s t u d i o has completed baan phermsang-ngam, a two-story house in chiang mai, thailand, whose upper level comprises a monolithic curved volume. designed for a structural engineer, the 300 sqm residence features steel cladding in parts as a conceptual material that represents the career of the owner. as such, one can find steel in every transitional space of the house, such as in parts of the entrance, in interior details, as well as in the courtyard. the steel plates have not been painted or decorated in any way, as the architects wanted to present the beauty of the original material.

b l a n k s t u d i o has used a double-wall façade on the second floor of the house, which helps protect it from exterior heat and ensures enough privacy for the residents. the different widths of voids on the façade are designed based on each interior function and the view of the surrounding context. inside, an open-air courtyard connects the indoors with the outdoors, and allows natural light and air to reach every space around it, creating a sense of calmness and liveliness. last, the skylight in the hall is designed to further allow natural light to enter into the transitional space all day. in consequence, the users can keep in with the sense of liveliness whether they are on the first floor or the second floor.
