Hillside House / SAOTA

May 4, 2020 Valeria Silva 0

SAOTA’s Hillside home in Los Angles is located immediately above Sunset Boulevard on a promontory just one over from Pierre Koenig’s landmark Stahl House. The site is a 20 000 square foot estate, featuring 300-degree views over the LA skyline and the city basin below, and the design was conceived of more as a self-contained oasis rather than a conventional house. The Stahl House served as a key point of departure. The forms and articulation of Hillside’s roof planes, which were pushed as far forward as possible so that they could create meaningful external covered living spaces, set its architecture in dialogue with the iconic silhouette nearby and connect it to the drama of its context.

The extension is made up of horizontal layers combining three materials: wood, white concrete and glass.

Sinsu-dong, Mapo-gu, is a general residential area with many old houses in Seoul. The site where the Sista House is located borders on a narrow road that is less than 4 meters wide and the neighborhood was lagging behind after redevelopment efforts of many years had failed. Also, real estate brokers started to build illegal multiple housings in the alley instead of house owners who sold and left their homes. A young couple in their 30s wanted to build a rental house here for women. They were usually concerned with and felt a critical mind with housings for women.

Located in Hamedan’s primary business district and situated between several mixed-use high and low-rise buildings, the Atlas Medical Office Building welcomed its first occupants in late 2019. The building showcases how the use of innovative design strategies and advanced digital tools combined with cost effective materials and simple construction systems can result in a novel design outcome. The project privileges regionally sourced construction materials, and throughout the construction process local labor and experience was favored.
