Britannia House / Shugarman Architecture + Design Inc

The Britannia Residence sits atop the east bank of the Elbow River in southeast Calgary, Alberta. Architecturally, the residence challenges traditional planning typologies of private and open spaces within a single-family dwelling. In many contemporary neighborhoods, the preference for family outdoor living is toward the more private back yard, as opposed to prioritizing the front porch as was done in the past.

An active couple wanted a clean and straightforward, yet tough and durable, retirement home. Sited in a cattle pasture in rural Mississippi, this house is a retreat for an active couple to escape busy city life. Appreciating the simple agrarian structures of the region, the clients requested a house that was simple and clean, yet tough and durable.

The project is a rework of an on-going hotel construction from the previous design that actually has already in topping-off position. Basically the client wanted to recompose the almost finish facade to seamlessly connect all the seemingly undesired result, such as the very obvious four balconies exposed from the main road, and to tackle groups of air-con machine stick to the perimeter wall exposed from the side road.

Located in downtown Dallas, the substantially modified 1217 Main Street building reopened in December of 2017 with the most striking change to the 1950s-era bank building being the exterior. The building was originally built in 1958 as the Guardian Savings Bank. Having gone through two fires over the last 20 years, among other misfortunes, 1217 Main has become a true revival story, transforming from a liability into an urban asset for both the city and neighborhood. It has been cited as one of ten best structures in Dallas within the last decade by Mark Lamster, the acclaimed architectural critic for The Dallas Morning News.

In previous projects, a system of concrete beams and columns was used to free the floor plans of columns, better connecting the different spaces while letting the outdoors in. In Bunker House, we employed this concrete system not only as structure, but also as spatial partitions and the project’s guiding aesthetics.

This project began in 2017 with a family long-term plan.  At the time, the family simply wanted to take down the 30 year old single storey house and build a new bigger one to suit more requirements.  According to the family, the new house means a significant milestone, and it must be a good place for the son’s formative years.  However, there are two challenging conditions that govern the project: (1) the property’s size is quite small, 236 sq.m.  when compared to all new requirements, (2) the project should nicely create the family bonding among 5 members from 3 generations a grandmother, a father, a mother, a son, and an aunt.
