July 27, 2019 舒岳康 - SHU Yuekang 0

Background
In 2015, IDO completed the first design hotel (called Munwood Lakeside) in Dali, China, in collaboration with Chongqing Hexin Architectural Design Institute. We played a dual role in that project since we were our own client. We participated in all stages of that project, from planning and site selection to design, construction and operation. In the same year, we started the design of Munwood Panoroma, which is the second hotel of Munwood series, located on the east bank of Erhai Lake. The feedbacks received from guests on Munwood Lakeside gave us references and impetus to approaching the design of this project.

The factory
Comparing to those iconic big factory buildings with Bauhaus style in 798 zone, this factory is not so special and obvious. Its history is impossible to trace back, and tenants afterwards also made a lot of add-on in both interior and exterior space. It also reduced the original form of massing which is more and more ambiguous. The plan is almost a C shape, with an enclosed courtyard. The interior space is naturally split to 3 independent rectangular rooms for different tenants.

The concept of new retail was proposed by Jacky Ma in 2016, which was supposed to be the outcome of the combination of online, offline retails and logistics. Because the benefits arising from the Internet demographic dividend to the natural fans growth of e-commerce will hit a bottleneck over time. Under such a circumstance, Yitiao.tv decided to shift its business to offline markets, just as what the founder of Yitiao.tv said in an interview, “According to my personal estimation, the cost for getting a loyal customer through offline retail is only 10% of that through online retail”.
