S House / MM++ architects

S House is a small, quiet house that asks a simple question: how might we live more lightly, even within the density of the city? Set on a narrow plot in Tan Thuận Tây, District 7, the house draws its spirit from rural life in the Mekong Delta — a way of living shaped by weather, plants, open air, and daily rituals rather than walls. Though surrounded by urban streets, S House feels closer to an eco-lodge than a city dwelling: a personal rural refuge with gentle touches of modernity.

A 360-degree turnstile is the heart of our design, transforming the home into a changing medley of spaces. When closed, the wall blends into a shade of pink. With a slow, dramatic turn, the spaces beyond are revealed. Now, a maroon shelf and its contents are on full display.

Peeking above a 1915 Edwardian cottage sits a white curved shell, a contemporary extension to a weatherboard home in a heritage pocket in inner-west Melbourne. Cereus House brings light, height, and flow to the existing dwelling through the addition of two curved forms that overlook the north-facing backyard. The clients wanted a solid, thermally comfortable home with bright spaces and a connection to the outside. It needed to accommodate working from home, be a sanctuary for retreat, and connect to the couple’s property behind for when family and friends visit. A part of the brief was to retain an oversized cereus cactus in the backyard’s east.

This project is an architect’s home and office located in a densely populated residential area of Tokyo. As there were other houses adjacent to the boundary of the site on all sides except for the north side, where the road is located, it was decided to install a large window facing the road, but the challenge was how to create a bright garden view through the north-facing window.

This is a construction project for a new, two-storey wooden daycare centre, replacing a nursery built approximately 50 years ago. This project was secured through a selective tender process. In recent years, it has become increasingly challenging for design firms to secure public building projects. This tender system enables us to take on projects of a manageable scale, allowing us to enhance our expertise and build valuable experience.

Amid the tides of time, architecture bears witness to change, taking on new roles within the same site. Situated within an elementary school campus, the project occupies a rare, well-preserved early 20th-century residential building—originally constructed during the Japanese colonial period—now embedded within a contemporary educational environment. Once a humble dwelling, the space now serves as a rush-weaving classroom. Rather than restoring a relic, the design opens a dialogue between history and daily life, creating a third space between memory and use.
