Project Weavefield / studio whispace + architects

January 11, 2026 Miwa Negoro 0

Amid the tides of time, architecture bears witness to change, taking on new roles within the same site. Situated within an elementary school campus, the project occupies a rare, well-preserved early 20th-century residential building—originally constructed during the Japanese colonial period—now embedded within a contemporary educational environment. Once a humble dwelling, the space now serves as a rush-weaving classroom. Rather than restoring a relic, the design opens a dialogue between history and daily life, creating a third space between memory and use.

DEMER Busan Station Store / design by 83

Building on the success of the second branch located in front of Jungang-dong’s iconic 40 Stairs, this third location is set near Busan Station, in the heart of a district densely lined with office buildings. By day, the street is alive with the flow of commuters, but once evening falls, it becomes strikingly still. As the bustle of the day recedes and the place seems to lose its vitality, the sudden quiet leaves us with a lingering sense of emptiness. It was from the question, “Could a space hold on to its warmth even after everyone has gone?” that this project began.

Perched on the hill of the west harbor, Taiping Elementary School bears witness to the rise and fall of the city of Keelung. It flourished in the 1960s, having been established to provide education for the children of dockworkers on the west wharf. Yet, with the transformation of industries, population outflow, and a declining birthrate, the school was closed in 2017.

For 20 years, this building stood abandoned — a silent reminder of forgotten spaces and wasted potential. Yet every abandoned structure carries hidden stories waiting to be reimagined. A century-old granary, left unused for decades, has now been thoughtfully transformed into a boutique farmhouse through architectural ingenuity and carefully chosen materials. Set against the backdrop of the Western Ghats and nestled between lush paddy fields and a serene pond, Kalam embodies rustic charm and timeless beauty.

MICROSCOPES – “Architecture is a microcosm”. The concept of “place” and “Ego” in architecture has also become the theme of Contemporary Architecture over the past decades. MÔhe’ritage does not exaggerate, does not turn architecture into a mark that goes with the years, MÔhe’ritage is simple, close, and gentle like someone’s innocent and emotional childhood. Being part of a series of projects on resort villas and small homestays, “MÔ” originates from the word “where” in the Central Vietnamese dialect, and is also a friendly invitation from indigenous people.
