The inspiration of the Lan Villa design came from the sensation of being surrounded by the beauty of nature and mountain landscapes. Located in the mountain area of Xindian district, Lan Villa is where we may reflect on the direction and connections with the spaces within our lives. Throughexperiencing beautiful outdoor scenery, we find ways to interact, live and enrich our life with nature.
The project is located in Beijing Huairou Shayukou village, Yishanzhu B&B Resort. Its name is from the poem of Su Shi：The Songfeng Pavilion is built amidst beautiful mountains. It is backed by green mountains and overlooks the boundless plains. Whenever the night is quiet, the Northern Star and comet seem to be stuck on the eaves. This hut was built on a hillside with fruit trees.It is used to provide visitors with place to take a break when climbing the mountain, and also for workers who maintain fruit trees.
This project is an office space transformed from an old factory, located in the first Chongqing printing factory built in the 1930s. It’s like a newly built house, because light industry doesn’t leave much of a mark on the house. The interior space is 25 meters long, 5 meters wide and 6 meters high.This is not a small space for a team of less than ten people, but as a planning company, they have a unique way of allocating space: except for eight workstations and a leader’s office, the rest of the space is reserved for clients. Including one-on-one negotiations, round-table meetings, large screen display and presentation. In terms of space type, it is not like an office, but closer to a lecture hall or a small theater.
Opportunities:
On December 2,2016, the World Industrial Design Conference opened successfully in Liangzhu Industrial Design Town, and the presence of Vice Premier Ma Kai of the State Council reflected a deeper understanding of the value of design to the economy society in China. Thanks to China’s attention and sufficient resources, the Industrial Design Town has been identified as the permanent venue for the international communication conference. At the same time, the operation department needs to provide office and exhibition facilities for the resident agencies of the national industrial design associations. Based on the principle of nearby site selection and collective effect, the base of the project was finally determined in Qiu Jia Wu Village near the industrial design town.
Origin and Site Selection
Shanghai Fudan Jingshi Bookstore was established in 1993 and is affiliated to Fudan University Press. It is the only state-owned comprehensive bookstore with a large scale in the area of Fudan. Due to the adjustment of the university’s overall planning, Jingshi Bookstore moved from the old site (No. 579 Guoquan Road) last year and chose to “settle down”again at No. 286 Guonian Road. To the north of the new site is the Liberal Arts Library of Fudan University; to the west are the Fifth and Sixth Teaching Buildings and the Liberal Arts Building; and to the east is the School of Management, which together constitute a reading base full of academic and humanistic atmosphere. The Guonian Road where the bookstore is located is a quiet small road with the unique atmosphere of the campus, on both sides of the road are luxuriant platanus trees. Our starting point for design is to give a full play to the characteristics of the site.
At beginning of 2020, everyone stays at home, traveling is not allowed. During this special period, there is still one thing that could let our mind fly far away, talk to ancient wise people beyond time and location, which is reading. The mode of Bookstore Plus does not fit our social environment well, and the to-do just a popular project is never our main target. During the only face to face communication, we agreed that the bookstore design work should go back to the behavior of reading itself. One civilization arrived a strange universe cross time and space, a spaceship landing on an unfamiliar planet, setting up a new camp. The whole bookstore is a journey of the new human who enjoys traveling in the universe of knowledge.
Here & Now
Two years ago, Atelier LAI constructed a bridge in an old village in Huizhou, named “Suspended Flying Bridge” for it spanning the two ends of the bank and hanging above the river. The material is taken from the local bamboo. The design utilized modern structural knowledge and picturesque conceptions to bring out the resilience of bamboo, showing a tectonic scenario of the countryside. Here and now, the material and the technique are interwoven into an organic and self-contained object.
The Social Space is a conversion of a swimming pool into a shared multifunctional area for the office tenants at Jing’an Kerry Centre, Shanghai. It is designed as an extension of the traditional office to accommodate events, talks, town halls, meetings, and flexible work. The existing site was a functional swimming pool with a large oval skylight above. Linehouse conceived the space as a hearth located under the skylight, mimicking its elliptical form; the hearth being the central space in the home for gathering around a fireplace. It is both a symbol of domesticity and a creative centre.
“Surrounded by unified city facade, one of our greatest wishes is to get away from this environment, and the best way is to create new: it seems to be born out of the blue sky, it is impossible even to see its origin, and become a complete Innovative, unreferenced architecture.”
Located on the waterfront of Xianxi Reservoir in Nanshan District, Foshan, Foshan Meisha Bilingual School is adjacent to the Nanshan University Town next to the Foshan University of Science and Technology. This 9-year system boarding school established by Vanke Meisha Education with great efforts covers an area of approximately 62,000m2, running 72 elementary school classes and 36 middle school classes. In the context of building a first-class modern school with excellence that requires integrating the essence of Chinese and Western cultures while promoting the reformation of education methods and learning spaces, AUBE Conception puts forward the design concept of a “Playground Community” that interlinks various functional spaces of “study, accommodation, canteen, leisure and play” to have the school evolve from simply a teaching place into a playground of diverse experiences, creating a composite learning-living place for edutainment.
