62, Jorbagh Building / Common Ground Practice

April 9, 2020 Hana Abdel 0

Breaking the ceaseless row housing of Delhi, 62 Jorbagh occupies a unique site in the heart of India’s National Capital Region seamlessly amidst an urban context. With a plot size of 314 sq. m. and a total built up area of 1,114.8 sq. m., the program segregates the built volume vertically into a basement, a stilt floor, four 3-bedroom apartments, each with a helper’s quarter and terrace. Sited in a heritage-rich context with the Safdarjung tomb & Lodhi gardens in proximity, the architecture of this modern Indian home is a perfect union of contextual nuances and an appropriate response to sustainability issues in the modern world.

Dao sub-school belongs to the number 2 Xuan Hoa primary school, located at Xuan Hoa commune- an area of many extremely difficult condition households in poverty in Bao Yen District, Lao Cai province. The sub-school has 78 students, from 06 to 11 years old (Grade 1 to 5 respectively). All of the students are ethnic minorities from the Tay, Nung, Dao and Mong tribe. Multi-culture is a highlighted feature in the sub-school that needs to be considered in our approach to develop this project. In 5 classrooms in Dao sub-school, there are 02 temporary classrooms including grade 4 (10 students) and grade 5 (10 students). The building is very vulnerable and close to a collapse of the wood structure, as badly damaged and badly repaired joints.

House at Kalalgoda / Damith Premathilake Architects

“The Kalalgoda House”, sits on a 14.4 perch land, in the suburb of Colombo known as Kalalgoda, adjoining a serene paddy field. This nature friendly abode brings together nature and architecture to celebrate the beauty of its adjoining paddy field.
Despite the challenge of having to design on a narrow site, the house is designed for its tropical context to achieve ideal  orientation. The front of the land faces the entrance road while the rear faces the endless serene paddy field. It helps to capture natural ventilation that creates a comfortable and cool atmosphere inside the house.

We met the client who had a request to design a new 76-square-meter house (4,5 meters wide and 17 meters long) in the urban area of Thanh Hoa, a city in the middle part of Vietnam. The owner wished to have a three-story house providing a space for a family of four people, a young couple and two children. Before the concept stage, they gave us some requirements to follow: a house differently compared to around ones in the neighborhood and a house with a strong connection between the family members.

Studio Inkline / INKLINE Design Studio

INKLINE studio and workshop is an office project we embarked on to house our design studio and the workshop for our furniture/product manufacturing. The design is an example of Vernacular Architecture heavily inspired by Japanese crafts – Origami, which is easily seen in the design of the roof. Origami was used to develop the roof structure which is the main element of the structure as it canopies over the frame of the building. Several iterations later using parametric modelling in Revit to control the undulation of the roof structures after establishing nodes and folding line, we realized this. A roof structure with open façade to portray a welcoming embrace to the studio which has the entrance also used for the showroom of products and furniture.

Venus House / Ming Architects

The brief for this intermediate terrace house in Singapore requires discreet separation of spaces for the clients, a large inter-generational family. Due to the family size, more floor area was required than the usual building envelope could support. As the site is small, the challenge was to create sufficient space and yet achieve privacy between the separate spaces and zones for the individual family members. In a highly dense built-up country like Singapore, creation of space within tight limits is a necessity for successful architecture.
