Satish Jassal Architects has completed a new-build single-storey house on a backland site in Haringey, north London. Located behind a butcher’s shop on busy Turnpike Lane, and accessed via a 1m-wide covered passageway between retail premises, constructing the house was “like building through a straw,” says Satish. Despite the challenging site, the result is a home that brings light, volume, and materials to the fore.

The site is adjacent to a steep slope on the outskirts of Namsan Mountain, facing the steep road leading from the former Yongsan Garrison to Huam-dong. This district, commonly known as “Haebangchon,” was initially formed as an elevated settlement for groups of refugees right after the liberation in 1945. Later, influenced by the distinct U.S. military culture near the Itaewon vicinity, a complex urban context emerged, intertwining with the development of commercial zones like Itaewon and Gyeongridan-gil in the post-2000 era. Although a developing commercial district began to take shape, primarily centered around the lower section of Sinheung Road, the vicinity around the Haebangchon Intersection near Huam-dong presents a somewhat quaint scenery, a blend of indigenous culture and the judicious integration of newcomers through emerging market revitalization projects.

Red Fort Center / Design Factory India

Red Fort Centre is a new gateway for visitors to re-experience the events and the fortress’s heritage-built fabric under Dalmia Bharat through adaptively reusing one of the defunct structures of the British military barracks at the world heritage site of the Red Fort. The colonial government built the military barracks after the First War of Independence of 1857. The Britishers had destroyed significant structures within the Red Fort to build the barracks with the material from the ruins. The barracks are defunct or partially used since independence; however, only withering under the deep layers of plaster, paint, and lack of ethical conservational measures. Once the multiple layers of plaster were removed from the surfaces of the barrack, many intricately carved stones were found embedded in the masonry. These pieces are living proof that the barracks were built using the ruins of the original Mughal buildings that once existed on the Red Fort’s premises. Therefore, the contemporary design strategy of the visitor center lives up to the fortress’s multi-layered history without being ostensive or subdued, making the spaces breathable.

This dock is a structure that negotiates between the realms of land, water, and sky by framing one’s experience and understanding of the natural environment, above, along, and in the water. Located at the base of a steeply sloping ravine with leads to a residence elevated above the water, the dock is intentionally crafted as an integrated component of the overall site conditions.

Veil House / 5468796 Architecture

July 27, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

In a prairie-value, conservative-minded early 20th-century Winnipeg suburb composed primarily of large-scale, traditional-style dwellings, our clients sought a home in which to age in place and enjoy a high degree of both airiness and privacy. Veil House is arranged on a loose nine-square grid organized around a central courtyard. The residence is configured as a series of free-flowing open living spaces, (living, family, dining, kitchen, circulation) framed by solid utility blocks, (washroom, laundry, fireplace, storage, appliances). This interplay eliminates the need for walls and doors. The unique configuration allows all living spaces to be spatially defined while also visually and acoustically connected. Double height spaces – sloped ceilings (kitchen + family room), infinite ceiling (dining room), double volume (living room), and open volume (courtyard) blur the grid in sections and create a private primary bedroom on the upper floor.
