The new office building for ‘De Watergroep’ in the Koning Boudewijnstraat, near St. Peter’s Station, consists of a four-story main building and a meeting hub at the back of the site. The complex stands on an underground parking area. Within the urban context, this project provides for maximum but elegant densification. The concept of the facade starts from a thorough reading of the street elevation that responds to the horizontal layering and vertical articulation of the houses in the surroundings.

Faith-Based Nursing Foundation Community Center / Ford 3 Architects

July 14, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

With a growing constituent staff, students, and residents, the Foundation sought a new space to commune its population for varied affairs-chief among them worship. Ford 3 developed a simple design with a flexible interior that puts focus on its surroundings with wraparound floor-to-ceiling gazing. Sited on a flat area between wetlands and existing roads of a larger campus, the design places the building’s utilities nearest to the main road and hides them under a planted grass mound with integrated outdoor amphitheater seating. This seating choice reflects the client’s modesty and creates privacy for the community center while remaining near and engaged with the remainder of the campus.

Minimal, white finishes emphasize the geometric form of this house in Crema. Named L2A house, the two-story, three-bedroom house aims to create a contemporary interpretation of a villa, essential in its sculptural forms but comfortable in its spaces. Outside, a sequence of straight and curved lines defines the volumes that interact with each other in a play of joints. The porch wraps around two sides of the house, protecting the south-facing living area during the hottest hours and opening westward into a large, summer living area. The white sunshades filter the light, creating a sense of intimacy and privacy and ensuring that the house remains cool and shaded, enhancing the comfort of its inhabitants even during the hottest days.

For its latest project, LCA Architetti designed the building’s outer facades and provided energy consulting to meet the goal of an energy-efficient, completely passive industrial space. The project’s main goal was to highlight the building’s high level of sustainability; this was achieved through the architecture itself, and specifically the design of two main facades (West and South). These face two very high-traffic roads: the A8 Highway on the West side, and the State Road 20 on the South side.

Tammisto Electricity Substation / Kivinen Rusanen Architects

The Tammisto Electricity Substation site in Vantaa has served the Helsinki metropolitan area as a central power grid hub for decades. The oldest systems on the site needed modernization to improve their reliability, capacity, and safety. To achieve this, the Finnish main grid operator, Fingrid Oyj, constructed a new building to house a 110 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) system, replacing an extensive, ageing air-insulated switchyard. The project also included the construction of new powerline structures, fences, a backup power generator, extensive landscaping, and fresh greenery. The construction process was carefully phased to minimize disruptions to ongoing substation and grid operations, and to ensure a smooth transition. The project also allows for future expansion of the substation’s capacity, future-proofing it for the growing need for electricity.

Pearl Block Building / D’Arcy Jones Architects

Pearl Block is a compact cluster of six rowhouses. Staggered in response to the unusual triangular site, the building’s form modifies a common housing type to provide each resident with a generous outlook of the street. This neighbourly gesture preserves the privacy of the surrounding homes and enhances the privacy afforded to each Pearl Block unit. The project brief was to create 4–6 new rowhouses for young families who appreciate the qualities of single-family homes, but are also interested in living more compactly and sustainably. These desires, along with the ever-increasing cost of real estate, provide an incentive to explore an architectural type in search of an ideal scale for family homes in the city.

Guardia di Finanza Office Building / DEMOGO

July 13, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

The new regional headquarters of the Guardia di Finanza offices in Bologna, Italy is a project situated within a complex context—an area on the margins enclosed by urban partitions and characterized by a series of heterogeneous spaces. To the north, the railway line and Bologna’s high-speed train station create a continuous curtain of partitions and logistic infrastructures. To the south, there’s the dynamic and evolving area of the DumBO Social Center. To the east, it is bordered by Via Tanari and the layered edges of the stratified city of Bologna. DEMOGO’s project interprets this marginal urban condition as an opportunity for connection and regeneration within the district. The new structure, perpendicular to Via Tanari and seamlessly integrated with the original core of the Bertarini Barracks, functions as a compact element with an articulated elevation. A series of terraces, in harmony with the office areas, are designed as outdoor extensions to the program. These elevated gardens, gradually descending along the five above-ground floors of the building, are conceived as spaces that not only enhance the environmental quality of the work areas but also establish a visual connection with the urban landscape of the city of Bologna.

Corniche House / OPEN ARCHITECTES

The owners wanted to settle in a green and quiet setting on the outskirts of the capital. As their children grow up, they need more autonomy, while still retaining a foothold in the family cocoon… The idea is to create a ‘nest’ where intimacy is preserved, where each can live independently and in harmony with the other… A reflection on the family, its connections, its sharing and its need for intimacy…

La Cime is a micro-chalet project in the heart of nature in the village of Sainte-Béatrix in Lanaudière, with the sensory adventure as a starting point. It is located on a densely wooded land offering high views of the treetops. The small dwelling borders a significant drop in land of approximately 100 feet. Depending on the season and the density of the foliage, we can see the De la Boule River further below.
