The former youth infrastructure was completely outdated and the municipal council wanted to construct a new building on the site. In addition to the youth infrastructure, there is a former football field, a tennis club and a playground here, but all these entities were isolated from each other. To eliminate the bottlenecks on the site, an alternative and clear scenario was devised for the new building, whereby the site was also designed and delimited in a fascinating and readable way.

On the site of the former North Railway Station in Vienna’s second district, we have realized our first residential high-rise. By 2025, a new urban quarter with six high-rises as defining cornerstones will be completed here. Part of the former industrial wasteland is preserved as a large, urban wilderness – the “Freie Mitte” (Free Centre). In exchange, the residential towers around its perimeter reach metropolitan heights.

The vision of the overall concept – Living Places – which was initiated by EFFEKT, Artelia and the VELUX Group, is to lead the way within the building industry and show how rethinking buildings can help solve some of the global climate and health challenges. The concept is based on five key principles: homes should be healthy, affordable, simple, shared over time and scalable. These principles can be applied to new or existing buildings and communities.

Triangle House / Artefact Studio

July 11, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Triangle House is a detached home at the end of a cul-de-sac overlooking Roseberry Park in Epsom, developed by Ideal Homes in the 1950s. Artefact created a new wing to the house that chases the afternoon sun at the back of the garden. Crafted from triangular blue blocks and terracotta tiles, with a warm yellow ceiling, the extension references the tones of the existing house and the client’s heritage, inspired by the book Caribbean Style. The vibrant architecture is framed by an exotic planting scheme by Phenomena, as banana palms and lush planting unfurl along the sweeping blue terrace that unites the existing house and the extension.

Architect Donald Luckenbill, a senior architect at the practice of Paul Rudolph, completed work on Oceanus House, situated atop Mount Olympus, in 1992. Overhauling a modest home built on the property in 1975, Luckenbill doubled its footprint and completely changed its fundamental shape and style. However, subsequent interventions over the years gradually eroded the house’s coherence, leading to the need for thoughtful modernization.

A well-functioning Innovation Campus with understated extravagance – The Novonesis Innovation Campus is a modern centre for innovation, knowledge-sharing, and customer support as well as an inspiring and efficient workplace. It is designed for Novonesis, a global bioscience company, serving food, dairy, beverage, nutritional and agricultural industries. The keyword for the new campus is well-functioning, understated extravagance. It interprets classic Danish modernism in a contemporary way through clear tectonics, easy wayfinding, and high-end materials inside out, such as oak and natural stone – all with a high level of detailing. The new functions include a dairy, laboratories, a customer-support centre, an auditorium, meeting spaces, offices, and a canteen. Situated in a forest in a 1960s masterplan by Arne Jacobsen, the Innovation Campus now harmonise with the beautiful surroundings and showcases how an extension can turn worn-down, mono-functional buildings into a coherent innovation hub by interweaving new functions. This reduced demolition and the gross area, thus minimising climate imprint.

Water Farm House/ Studio Bark

July 10, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Studio Bark has completed ‘Water Farm’, an off-grid home in Suffolk with a bold geometric timber design, inspired by local timber frame buildings. Water Farm was designed to nurture the needs of a young family of five, moving away from the city, with strong ties to the site and a desire for off-grid living. The result is an exciting, yet hyper-functional five-bedroom off-grid home. The geometric timber-clad roof is the home’s defining feature. Born out of an early study into local timber frame buildings, it soon became its own entity, a powerful man-made form that strikingly contrasts its natural surroundings. The clients approached Studio Bark with a dream for a ‘home for life’ on the family farm – rooted in decades of family history. At that time they were living in Essex with their three children and seeking the quality of life that rural Suffolk could offer, whilst still being a reasonable train journey to London. Located on the edge of Dedham Vale AONB, this Suffolk site features mature woodland and pasture, with a westward slope and a central crest. The landscape is characterized by trees, hedgerows, and two distinctive field oaks, offering picturesque views and glimpses of the Stour Valley through clearings. Designed to be both seen and enjoyed, the proposal takes advantage of the nearby public right of way, allowing the passersby to appreciate it as an architectural statement that enhances the scenic quality of the area.
