From an architect’s professional practice, even for a private small space, or a yard for a hermit in solitude in the city, priority will also be given to consideration of the project’s location. This courtyard lies between two ancient temple clusters: one, only a block away, is the Northeast watchtower turret of the Palace Museum; the other, occupying half of the alley to the north, is the Zhizhu (pearl of wisdom) Temple. The former has become a cultural calling card of the civilization of the ancient capital Beijing, while the latter, restored and rehabilitated several years ago by the Belgian-born architect Wen Shounuo and his team, has started to hint at the promise and potential of reviving ancient courtyard space into something new.

Huangchong Market / Multi-Architecture

February 24, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Village. Huangchong Village is a typical newly-built village,in the central region of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong, China. A typical Lingnan village might be expected with the winding waterways. But as a matter of fact, two kilometers away from the upstream of the river, there is a traditional village that is more consistent with general imagination, covering stone bridges and ancestral halls in the late Qing Dynasty. And the place in the aerial photo is called Huangchong Village, where it exposes us to another practical context. It is a place difficult to describe in terms of preliminary understanding. Probably, it can be described as “wild” and “vague” place: It is a vital village filled with people and daily life. As a new village without the elements of traditional Lingnan villages, such as ancestral halls, iron sheets and tiles are major compositions, paired with the pragmatic atmosphere of small businesses. The ambiguity pervaded in the countryside of the Pearl River Delta is emerged from the street life and reacted upon the life here, which might lead to a loss of identity, though it is not a derogatory term.

Timber Bridge in Gulou Waterfront / LUO studio

February 22, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Background: rural revitalization. Due to the unique tidal flat landform, Gulou in Jiangmen City established the tradition of making use of the water system to dig ponds and form mounds for fishing and farming. As the water system and fish ponds occupy a large area and form a fragmented spatial pattern in local villages, many bridges have been built to connect the areas segmented by water. With rapid urbanization in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, many local villagers have abandoned the traditional fishing lifestyle in favor of living a more urban life. For this reason, water villages in which people make a living by fishing have been gradually disappearing. Gulou Waterfront is an eco-cultural tourism resort developed by OCT in the context of rural revitalization, aiming to combine rural development with the cultural background of local villages on the premise of preserving the unique spatial fabrics featuring mounds and ponds. The resort maintains the form of the basic local water system while organically integrating nature education, parent-child recreation, and fishing & husbandry activities. Those operations in the resort require several bridges in certain areas, to facilitate the movement of people and fishing boats.

Flower Station / TJAD Original Design Studio

February 15, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Background. The Flower Station is the primary pavilion of the exhibition Flowering Puhuitang for the 2021 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, located in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The site is adjacent to Qinzhou Road and East Tianlin Road, near the Puhuitang, an important waterway in Xuhui District, and was formerly a flower market that had to be reformed into a parkland during urban regeneration. The Flower Station is a forerunner in the comprehensive regeneration of the site, introducing the notion of “green, art, and co-building” into the traditional neighborhood. Under the premise of a limited budget, limited land area, and limited construction period, the design adopted a strategy of integrating architecture, structure, space, material, and structure and was successfully constructed in 109 days with the collaboration of all departments.

The large-scale limestone mining in the early years left a magical landscape in Qinglongshan Park, and now it has become a unique landscape resource of Qinglongshan Park. With the help of unique topography and landforms, the multi-function hall and waterfall pavilion form an embrace, and together with the towering boulders in the west, control and shape the core space scene of the park. The single building design strengthens the connection between the city and the landscape, man and nature.

The Cultural Auditorium of Xiaowufen Village / YS-ONE DESIGN

February 13, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Cultural Auditorium. One Design has been committed to creating a public space integrating architecture to the landscape. In 2019, we accepted the invitation from the People’s Government of Pengjie Town, Luqiao District, Taizhou City to preside over the renovation of the public architecture in Xiaowufen Village, a typical village in southeast China. As the heart of the local village culture, the village hall is the symbol of the local culture and spirit. Due to the time limit during the construction of the old building, a thoroughly mining of the characteristics of the local culture was absent. To renovate it is just like a journey to discover and reinforce the culture of the old village rather than to restore a building or a piece of landscape.

Reconstruction of the Community Office in Asian Games Village / China Architecture Design & Research Group

February 11, 2022 Collin Chen 0

How to wake up the whole community by micro-updates or a catalyst is the key point. And then next is how to make the street corner bring more energy. After a long time of carefully planning and rounds of tough negotiations, an Asian Games Village neighborhood community office was finally decided to transform this place into, construct a Winter Olympic home for the people, and build a beautiful community office for Beijing. Its position serves as a start point to show the courage to change! The old exhibition hall should be changed into a brand new building, which is a gorgeous turn of the street corner, by the means of low cost, light intervention, and easy construction. It would no longer be the traditional street office of gatehouse style and window hall, but the center of community life in the new era, where the people can come in, see inside, and participate happily!
