workshopXZ Shanghai Office Renovation / workshopXZ

March 13, 2022 Collin Chen 0

The project is located in a lane on Huaihai Road, Shanghai French Concession. Built in 1930 as a garden house, the house has weathered the historical storm for nearly 100 years, compared to a well-preserved, restored historic building separated by a wall. It had lost its original plan and layout during the gradual adding-on throughout the history: Two slender wings have been added on either side of the main structure, which encircles the small courtyard like two arms; and the most interesting is a glittering ionic column painted gold standing in the center of an entry room, like a Ding Hai Shen Zhen. This column becomes the visual focal point of the entire space, and also the anchor of the entire design. The most open functions revolve around the column: exhibitions, drawing and model making, discussions, and a library, all take place here. Two 6mm thick stainless steel plain plates protrude from the wall, meet around the column, and anchor their load-bearing feet on the column. The gap between the two plates is filled with magnetic tracks, turning this suspended metal island into a pluggable workbench.

Begonia Inn / atelier mearc

The original frame of Begonia Inn is next to a terrace field south side facing the lake, which is in fact, the house owner made use of half of the terrace to build the ‘house’. Houses like this are common in the village. The subtle relationship could be read between the buildings, the terraces, and the village. The architectural frame is divided into X-axis and Y-axis from east to west and south to north, representing public and private rooms respectively. Surroundings by the building would be described by such terms as terraces, lakes, trees, parks, etc. Besides the terms, on the X-axis, the limited landscape is segmented by almost total transparent public spaces including the villagers’ houses, unfiltered, and revealing their different natures, in this way, village atmosphere both indoors and outdoors could be felt by living in an urban hotel and experiencing the rural.

Community Center of Baishadao Financial Town / URBANUS

March 6, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Located in a new financial town in the suburb of Shenyang, this planned 5,000 square meters community center belongs to a commercial plot that will house 50,000 square meters of future development. Our program research discovered two disadvantages: 1. this newly developing area does not have sufficient population to support large quantities of retails; 2. It is very questionable how to make a typical shopping center competitive. After a discussion with the client, we both agreed that this commercial center should be something special. Thus came the idea of using a botanic garden to energize the space. The client was very much excited about the proposal and commissioned URBANUS to design the entire 50,000 square meters project, rather than a singular community center. After analyzing various potential commercial models in this area, an innovative layout appeared: a greenhouse was employed as the center of all programs to attract visitors and start-up businesses.

Nantou City Guesthouse / Neri&Hu Design and Research Office

March 4, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Urban Village, or cheng-zhong-cun, is a phenomenon where the remnants of pre-industrial settlements are nestled amidst a seemingly modern metropolis. Nantou City, the site of Neri&Hu’s adaptive reuse project for an eleven-room guesthouse, is an example of such an urban village. Situated at the heart of Shenzhen, a burgeoning city with astonishing growth, Nantou City has evolved from a well-heeled ancient capital to the overcrowded inner city it is now. Visitors today are immediately immersed in the tightly knit alleys, plazas, and dead-ends, where residents, street vendors, unsupervised children, nomads alike roam.

Green Cloud House / Jiejie Studio

Project Background. This is a bookstore reconstruction project located on the west side of Zhongguancun Street in Beijing. The owner of Sheyu World bookstore entrusted us with the reconstructing design of its first floor on the basis of the original two-story building. Besides, the teahouse function is added except for the bookstore function. The site is situated inside the city block and surrounded by urban buildings. There is only an eastern side opening towards the front public courtyard. We try to find the relationship both inside and outside from here, aiming to build a block facade facing outside and an inward courtyard facing inside. Green cloud house is the name of this courtyard. A half misty pond, a winding bridge, three cloud walls, seven pavilions, and several mountain terraces are the places built in this garden. You can enjoy reading or tea parties here, which are sooner upcoming.

Mountainside Courtyard House / Iway Architects and Associates

February 28, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Driving from Beijing, all the way to southwest, passing through tunnels, you can see mountains on the left, such as a screen, plains on the right and a village at the foot of the mountain. The village is called Zhengjiazhuang, which is also the location of the project. As a typical northern village, Zhengjiazhuang is built by red brick, gray tile and broken clay. Villagers tend to chat under a big tree in the central square. As a boutique homestay, the project is located in the southeast corner of the village, and acts as the first shot of Zhengjiazhuang’s revitalization.
