The Tourist Service Station of Tangshan Ape Man Cave / AESEU Architectural Technology and Art studio

November 11, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Project Background. “Building a bigger restroom in this area.”-This is the initial request I received when I was brought to this site by the first party in 2017. Nanjing Tangshan Ancient Ape Cave Scenic Area is famous for the discovery of ancient ape ruins and has always been a famous tourist attraction in the suburbs of Nanjing. There is a flood channel that runs east and west on the theorem slope of the mountain range because of the topography of the mountain range, which is the source section of the Tangshui River, the mother river of Tangshan. The project is located at the bottom of the northern slope of the mountain, the only narrow area left between the floodway and the city road. Limited by the cramped land use, the scenic area has been plagued by outdated service facilities issues. This project aims to move the humble ticket office and management office next to the original parking area of the scenic area to a larger site, and build a public restroom in the scenic area.

It’s a single-story building renovation project that located in the city park, surrounded by a large lawn, with excellent sight and a prominent position that can be easily detected. The idea of design hopes to create an open and modern reading public space, it also offers commercial services such as coffee and beverage retail, and aims to build up an attractive and multifunctional small public building. As a vibrant part of the city is created for people to relax, it makes up for the shortage of high-quality indoor space for people using the park.

The Transformation of the Former Qianshao Weaving Factory / TJAD Original Design Studio

We first visited the site in an early winter afternoon. Driving through the neat sequoias on both sides of Qianshao Road, we can see the water tower hidden in the dense trees. Stepping into the factory, a group of quite large-scale sawtooth-shaped factory buildings on the north side of the site conveyed the grand story with the memory of the weaving factory, while the rest of the small dilapidated buildings were scattered among the overgrown greenery and faded into the environment. This iconic group of factory buildings and water towers were kept as a memory of the site, stripped from the environment.

Qingli Home Stay / HEI Architectural Design Studio

Overview. This is an inward-looking building, a building “hidden, introverted and introspective”. To be exact, it is more like a building group, a building group simulating the structure of rural villages in Jiangnan or a modern garden building. The project is located in Moganshan Town, Deqing County, Huzhou City. It is a new three-story building, which will be used as a homestay after completion. The north side of the project is the Phase I building of the B&B brand, the south side is adjacent to a three-story residential building, and the west side is partially close to a stream next to the main road. The southwest side of the project is linked to the site, and the higher the road goes to the north, the greater the height difference between the road and the site, with a height difference of nearly 4 meters in the northernmost part. On the southwest side of the site, there is a three-story residential building on the opposite side of the road. On the west side, there are mountain tea gardens and bamboo forests across the road. On the east side, there is a large area of bamboo forests and mountains, making the whole area a narrow valley between the two mountains.

Yongchun Qiaoxinhong Red Vinegar Sightseeing Factory / LEL DESIGN STUDIO

November 8, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Overall design: aging in local conditions, innovation in inheritance. Terrier * is the general name of a local unique natural environment (including land, mountains, rivers, climate, products, etc.) and people’s customs and habits. Whether it can express local customs is, to some extent, the standard of whether the food is good. Yongchun has a unique natural environment suitable for brewing vinegar. It has good air and water quality. It also has the ancient technology of vinegar making and the tradition of every family brewing vinegar. In the overall design, we hope to create a park, so that visitors can fully experience the brewing of other red vinegar in the unique natural environment of Yongchun, and deeply experience the charm of brewing. At the same time, it is also hoped that visitors can experience the innovation of other vinegars of Yongchunhong in the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, and perceive the combination of technology and craftsmanship.

Qionglai Bamboo Pavilion / UNO Architects

November 8, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Qionglai Bamboo Pavilion is located in a small traditional rural community at the north end of the Baimo river bridge, next to over 100,000 acres of bamboo forest. For hundreds of years, Linpan settlements have been traditional rural communities in the western part of Sichuan. Often covered by woods, especially groups of bamboo, Linpan is an organic combination of woods, fields, houses, and water, it’s a reflection of the harmonious relationship between land and its people. That’s why famous local poet Su Shi from Song Dynasty said: “Better having no meat in eating, than having no bamboo in living.”

Suzhou Bache Community Center / Dedang Design

November 7, 2022 Collin Chen 0

“Let’s make a roof where we can see the sunset and the Grand Canal”, a simple and slightly exciting sentence when the site was first surveyed in the spring of 2020, sent a beautiful vision of the community center at the beginning of the design. Located on the old street of Bache in Wujiang, Suzhou, just a ten-minute walk from the canal, the community center is actually the first in a series of micro-renewals of the old street. The main motivation for the micro-renewal of the street was the upcoming completion of the future campus of Soochow University across the canal, and the leader proposed to turn Bache Street into an Academy Town, expecting the future students to become a new force in the street, bringing new opportunities for the renewal of the street. With such expectations, the small community center, as a public activity space, becomes a key vehicle for the integration of the old and the new, and it is no exaggeration to say that a small building takes on a big mission. We often joked later that this was a house with ambition.

Return and Outlook. “The leaves are fallen, green, green, fallen… That makes me, when the cicadas chirp in the summer, always stay cool and full of hope.” —— “Chengdu Historically Protected Buildings/Memories of People of CSWADI” Since its establishment in 1950, China southwest architectural design and research institute Co., Ltd. has experienced three office location changes in Chengdu, moving to No. 168, Jinhua Street, Jinniu District in 1957, to No. 866, North Section of Tianfu Avenue, Gaoxin District in 2010, and into the CSWADI Lakeside Design Headquarters in Tianfu New District when it was completed in 2020. The relocation of office parks is not only a mark of enterprise development but also a microcosm of Chengdu’s urban growth.

Timber-Roofed Restaurant / BEHIVE Architects

November 3, 2022 Collin Chen 0

The Site. The avenue of Jiaozi, is a grand boulevard in Chengdu that stretches two kilometers from east to west, with a 50-meter wide of landscape space on both sides. The restaurant is one of the twenty service stations that dot the boulevard. The site is located at the heart of the city, facing the busy street on the south and the soaring high rises on the north, and looking afar the twin towers at the end of the avenue. The sense of place is busy and intense, on the first visit we immediately envisioned a proposal that would bring a breath of nature. Working with materials and tectonics that evoke a sense of nature, we try to create a relaxing and approachable setting for people to sit down and enjoy the food.
