What does the village look like? What does the village itself want to be? When modern architecture enters the traditional village, the unusual form brings connection and conflict, and the simple volume and space inherit the unchanging temperament.

Renovation of a Hoffmann Kiln / HCCH Studio

October 31, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Pudong Hoffman Brick Kiln (referred to as “Pudong Red Kiln”) is located in Laogang Town, Nanhui, Pudong. It is a typical Hoffman Kiln. Patented by German Friedrich Hoffmann in 1858, the kiln features a ring passageway surrounded by small rooms. It was widely used over the world because of its efficient use of heat and fuel. It began to appear on the landscape of Shanghai in the early 20th century. The red kiln on the site had already lost its original function for a long. The roof and walls were collapsed and damaged, buried by soil, and overgrown with weeds. The site sits on the edge of an underused golf course bounded by a canal that flows from the center of the town to the East China Sea. As the site will be transformed into a suburban leisure park in the future, the red kiln will also be transformed from the ruins of production into a public place.

The Origin of Renovation – From Railway Station to Museum. From a typological point of view, the space of the traffic building and the exhibition building has a natural commonality. The tall waiting room and platform space of the railway station are suitable for transformation into exhibition space. The transformation of abandoned train stations into other functions has long been an international precedent. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris is the most successful example.

The studio is located in an old district in the urban area of Dali city. It was formerly a three-bedroom, two-hall residence on the first floor. The building is a brick-concrete structure. Since the original residence could not meet the daily needs of the studio, we reworked it. The main tasks of the studio renovation are: to improve the lighting and ventilation, adjust the layout and create a new space, with enough strangeness and a view.

PageOne Store / OFFICE AIO

A new PageOne recently establishes itself in the center of Beijing’s Haidian directly adjacent to Wudaokou Subway Station. It is a district where some of the nation’s brightest minds work and reside. In its vicinity are many elite high schools, universities, national research centers, and technology headquarters.  Office AIO gives the bookseller a design that caters to its cerebral community. But it also redefines the plot with a civic underscore beyond the building’s confine, a vision in which it acts as a social place that nourishes both book lovers and hurry-throughs with respect and openness to culture.

Shenzhen Shuiwei Pedestrian Bridge / ATDESIGNOFFICE

Shenzhen Shuiwei pedestrian bridge is located on Fuqiang Road, Futian District in Shenzhen. The bridge span is 70.5m. This project connects Huanggang Park, many schools, and residential areas. Due to the increased traffic, zebra crossing becomes a dangerous and inefficient way to move across the road. We consider the footbridge an important part of the multi-level slow movement system in the city. The design provides a unique experience to the pedestrian when they cross the road, and gives the bridge a sense of quality and spirit.

Context. The campus is on the site of a former large-scale chemical factory outside Beijing’s east Fourth Ring Road. It is now a growing urban community, a new home to tens of thousands of citizens. To design a 12-year basic education campus for 72 classes in this area, we hope that the campus with its unique form, on the one hand, responding to the new demands of educational reform can transfer temperature and motivate learning, on the other hand, the monotonous urban rhythm caused by a large number of homogeneous residential buildings in the surrounding area is gently confronted and actively adjusted.

HARMAY ARANYA Store / AIM Architecture

This site, on the ground floor of a newly built “traditional” apartment block, is not facing the usually busy street front but is set back on a deep in-active public plaza. Designing a store is one thing, but how to get people to notice it in the first place? Unable to touch the facade, the idea to activate the plaza seemed a natural move. It meant shifting our Focus on the journey, the experience of the public outside the store.
