It is a typical southern Sichuan settlement. The Bamboo Workshop is located in a crescent-shaped terraced field deep in Anshi Village. The natural texture of the terraced fields and the triangular site boundary formed by the country road naturally form the outline of the building. Combined with the business plan of rural revitalization in Anshi Village, the Bamboo Craft Workshop is conceived as a workshop focusing on bamboo weaving technology research.

November 20, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Located in Xishan District, Kunming, this project is in a city park in the Caohai area, adjacent to Dayu Road, near Hangrui Highway, north of Mount Mian, south of Caohai, surrounded by residential areas, which makes it a natural place for people to gather and wander around. Within the site is a one-room attic-style building with multilevel eaves and hipped roofs, which has been verified on site to be the Wen Xing Lou built in the Qing Dynasty, a local cultural preservation building. Although the original building has lost its function and is very shabby in appearance, its proper scale and form make it very harmonious with the surrounding environment, and there are often residents gathering spontaneously for some cultural worship activities.

Courtyard Market under the Big Roof / BIAD

November 18, 2022 Collin Chen 0

XingHuaDongLi Zuolinyoushe Neighboring Courtyard Market is a new handy service facility for the old XingHuaDongLi Community located in Daxing District, Beijing. XingHuaDongLi Community was built in the 1980s as staff dormitories for the Beijing Chemical Fiber Factory. Like other residential areas constructed in the old days, many of the fundamental facilities aged day by day, making lives inconvenient for the neighbors in the communities. Based on the realistic conditions, the government of Daxing District took the opportunity of organic renewal of old communities and built this handy service facility from the view of serving and benefiting residents, strengthening weaknesses surrounding “Seven Properties” &” Five Senses ”. As for functional configurations, fruit and vegetable stores, laundry, drugstores, and restaurants were set up considering the high percentage of old people in the community. The facilities will be further improved and adjusted to the needs of neighboring residents, making it a new service center for an old community for real.

As a cooperative of the means of production department near the ferry terminal on the East River bank, it is a necessary place for North-South ship trade. Until the beginning of reform and opening up, it witnessed the prosperity of the riverside. Jianshang Sports Complex / CCDI

November 16, 2022 Collin Chen 0

After five years of design and construction, the Jianshang Sports Complex was completed and fully put into use. Jianshang Sports Complex is the first vertical gymnasium in China, once praised by People’s Daily as “the stairway of giants”. This metaphor illustrates the morphological strategy adopted by the building in adapting to site conditions and functional needs. Due to the limitations of the site, the stadium is superimposed vertically. Echoing the urban space around the site, the building volume is dislocated and superimposed, giving way to the school on the south side and forming a shaded outdoor plaza on the north side.

House of Mountain Birds / Chaoffice

November 15, 2022 Collin Chen 0

During the Second World War, this courtyard was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt by the Japanese invaders and played the role of a temporary wartime prison. The new building was quite special, as a single-sloping roof with lower eaves faced the outside. Although surrounded by natural beauty, the yard was enclosed by high walls and deep shadows, and as the only place which received any light, the circling houses were shrouded in darkness. After the war, the government returned the house to its original owners. The house became a prison, and the prison turned back into a home.

Huiyang Shatian Town No. 2 Primary School / MultiArch

November 12, 2022 Collin Chen 0

When we started to work on this project four years ago, there was a big controversy on whether the site was suitable for building a primary school. On one hand, the site was located on the edge of the plot for a large-scale cultural tourism real estate project; on the other hand, the height difference in the site was as large as 35 meters. Many people, especially those in the education department, thought the site was not suitable because of the inconvenience and safety risks of school attendance for schoolchildren aged 7-12. However, the existence of the mountain excited us. We believed it was an opportunity to design a unique school. The mountain is like a double-edged sword. Good design could absorb its negative effects and highlight its positive value. Therefore, our solution to the issue was all about “the mountain”. We hoped to build a mountain campus, which was promising, accessible, and convenient.
