Village Opera / IILab.

Cultural backgrounds: Rural Revitalization, Rural Construction and Human Intervention – Modern society has released people from the contract with their land, and the human heart is no longer bound to the earth. When people are no longer attached to the land for granted, villages face the dilemma of what shall it use to grow and retain people. With the rapid development of cities, the countryside has become a selfless supplier of production factors such as land resources and human capital. Those villages that are not rich in arable land, like Beigou Village, can only export young and middle-aged labor to the outside world. This loss of population desertified the land and dilapidated dwellings. What cannot be bypassed in revitalizing the countryside is to reverse this one-way flow of people from the village to the city, allowing people to return from the city to the village, whether it is for short-term consumption or long-term living and working.

Renovation of the Diejiao Ancient Street / Atelier cnS LT Architects

February 13, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Diejiao, also known as Shuangxi, has a history of nearly 1,000 years. It was first established in 1101 AD and was formed by water. It is part of the alluvial plains of Xijiang and Beijiang. The traditional cultural activities in the marketplace, which have been going on for thousands of years, are especially valuable under the modern model of rapid consumption. At the same time, there are rich traditional folk activities, such as dragon boat, martial arts lion club, and Cantonese opera, whose own cultural characteristics are very distinct. “Dragon boat drift” is a must-see point of the dragon boat festival every year, people crowded with narrow lanes, waiting for a moment when the dragon boat sharp turn.

Original BTC Taipei / Soar Design Studio

Located in a quiet alley near the Zhongshan MRT station, occupying the first floor of an old 4-story duplex apartment building, the site captures a typical view of nostalgic Taipei. Right opposite the site, a traditional temple called “You-chou”, meaning “in need”, further enriches the local scene and style of Taiwan. For the past 4 decades, the house served as a general office. We opened up the kitchenette and turned it into part of the gallery space, while the original red embossed floor tiles still show traces of the old house. The backyard, once an extended warehouse, is transformed into an outdoor garden. In addition, the entrance wall was pushed back for an interior courtyard “between” in and out, introducing the view from the front yard to blur the old boundaries of space and bring in a sense of intrigue.

Kincang Modern Pre-School / LYCS Architecture

February 10, 2023 Collin Chen 0

The KINCANG Modern Pre-school in Shaoxing City, designed by LYCS Architecture on both exterior and interior, was officially completed and opened a few days ago. With a building area of 16,512 sqm, the architects designed the kindergarten according to the highest standards of Chinese kindergartens, including 18 classes. The project is located in a high-density old city, surrounded by residential areas of various ages. The Xiaoshao Canal flows quietly from the southeast of the site, reflecting the indifferent and peaceful life of the old city. The plot ratio of the project is as high as 1.3, making it a rare “high-density” kindergarten. The biggest challenge of this project is how to make a four-story kindergarten friendly and carry the vision of letting children get in touch with nature and release their imagination.

Harrierfall Hostel / DL Atelier

B&B and Games. At the end of 2020, near the Great Wall at Shuiguan in Huairou, Beijing, we designed three projects for Xiaoxi B&B simultaneously, perhaps it is more appropriate to call them rural hotels than B&Bs. I have designed and run such hotels before, and I would love to have a unique living experience of “breaking away from daily life” and a lifestyle of “here and now”. Architecture, as a carrier of this conception, is not a “home building” in the first place, for it holds little real life and memory of the owner, instead it resembles a “theme park” with the characteristics above, a reciprocating game between reality and fantasy. Since it is a game, there must be rules. The owner’s requirements are simple: to keep the characters of the three existing houses. And we will make up the rules.

LVWA Bookstore / Studio YUDA + Studio NOR

February 7, 2023 Collin Chen 0

In 2019, Studio YUDA and Studio NOR were invited by the Shanghai University of Sport and Shanghai Century Publishing (Group) Co., Ltd to design the first sports-themed bookstore in Shanghai, “Lvwa Sports Bookstore”. Facing the base in the original rough state, the only spatial idea put forward by the owner is to make full use of the skylight atrium with a height of 17 meters to “build a landmark”. This requirement, which usually only appears at the urban scale, not only clarified the core of the design but also changed the main extension direction of the bookstore space with only one floor from horizontal to vertical, sowing the seeds for our later formal concept.
