Dongfengyun Art Town, where the Art Center is located, is on the outskirts of Miele City, Yunnan Province, about an hour’s drive from Kunming, the Provincial Capital. Since 2014, Luo Xu, an artist from Yunnan Province, has created a series of sculptural installations such as “Kaleidoscope” and “Half A Cloud”, as well as large and small clusters of tile kilns built of red bricks, which have constituted an unrestrained exotic world with the red boundless Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and rugged mountains. The project tries to explore a light and calm atmosphere different from the popular office mode that emphasize dynamic and color. Space quality is achieved through a subtle material palette and precise detail.

Located in the northeast corner of multidimensional Suhe MixC World in Shanghai — an ‘urban valley’ comprising an underground commercial center set within a brand new green land for the city — this mixed-use Commercial Podium in East Alley (hereinafter referred to as “side building”) acts a gateway to physically and aesthetically connect its wider site, revealing the underground commercial valley to the urban public space. A destination in its own right, the side building also draws on various elements of its surroundings including the linear design language of a neighboring landmark tower and green space to blur boundaries between architecture and nature, inside and out, public and private.

A Rest Station on A Mountaintop / Jumping House Lab

February 3, 2023 Collin Chen 0

A rest station for a vista – Sitting in the mountains, the building is a rest station for bikers that is located at the highest spot of a cycle track. Towards the north there is potentially a broad, open view, which is currently blocked by trees at eye height, so we hoped to create a rest station that visitors could ascend and enjoy the vista. We have imagined how bikers will arrive at the rest station after a long ride: first, they will enter a corridor, park their bikes at the entrance, and take a break. For those with more curiosity or finding the cycle track tedious, they can explore further into the corridor that spirals up to the top of the mountain, where they can enjoy a splendid vista of the surrounding mountains.

Leshan Pocket Park / VIASCAPE design

February 2, 2023 Collin Chen 0

The source of Happiness: Reconstruct the public life behind Zikawei – Leshan pocket park, covering an area of 5600m2 in the very center of the Leshan community, appears to be the only integrated open space in the whole community. The pocket park is only 800m away from Zikawei, and within walking distance of various adjacent office towers, Schools, kindergartens, and universities. Before the renovation, the pocket park has an enclosed space with deteriorated conditions, making it hardly feed the current needs of public life. The concept of “shared happiness” of Leshan pocket park is weaved into the fabric of multifunctional spaces for both the elderly and kids, for viewing and wandering, playing and resting, reading and sharing. The final design covers activities for a full range of age groups while providing a holistic solution of landscape design as a public good. The design reconstructs the flourishing public life of Zikawei at the back, making the park itself act as an essential medium to activate urban public life.

Breakthrough : Rebuilding the daily public life for the residents
The Pavilion is located in XiangDong village, a Huangpu riverside community that is composed of mostly grungy apartment buildings.  480 local families live here in a room of only 10 square meters of clear floor space. The designer applied a positive design approach with a focus on a questionnaire survey and interviews as a start. With this method, the final design provides a reconstructed space that maintains local inhabitants’ daily life.

TanArt Community / Nomos Architects

The Xi’an Shiyou University residential campus boiler station was planned in 1994 and finally completed in 1997. However, due to changes in the urban heating system, it was closed in 2014. When we visited it in 2019, despite being relatively new, the boiler station presented an intriguing image of a historical ruin, surrounded by urban residential buildings. This type of coal-burning boiler station was once common in North China. However, with the shift to a different energy supply system, this type of facility will no longer be built. The tall chimneys and large coal scuttles that were designed with instrumental rationality have become obsolete with the end of production. However, these useless structures, which were not regulated by present zoning laws, remind us of the simplicity and straightforwardness of that rapidly developing decade. This type of boiler station has become a historical symbol of those golden years, even though most are still under 30 years old.

Renovation of the Primary School Affiliated to Longjiang Foreign Language School / Atelier cnS

January 19, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Overview – The Primary School Affiliated to Longjiang Foreign Language School (Wanggang School) is located in Longjiang, Shunde. The school is surrounded by a range of dense villages that are typical and symbolic in the Pearl River Delta. It is adjacent to Sanlian Industrial Park, which is the largest furniture industrial area in Longjiang. There is a strict limitation of land for school expansion and the contradiction between supply and demand on the campus space is very prominent. In order to meet the growing demands of high-quality education, the renovation manages to fully expand the existing land for the campus and improves the space utilization rate as much as possible, so as to ensure sufficient spaces for outdoor activities and to increase the number of the classroom from 22 classes to 42 classes.
