The Chengdu Natural History Museum (The Museum of Chengdu University of Technology) presents a celebration of Chengdu’s historical legacy and modern ethos, transforming the city’s skyline and symbolizing its energy and innovative spirit. The project successfully synthesizes the historical culture and context of Chengdu as it delves into the soul of the local elements “Shu Mountain, Shu Road, Shu Water”. The building massing was inspired by the geological mountain forms created by the shifting of ancient tectonic plates of the Chengdu region. The volumes reflect the rock breaking apart and shifting with the horizontal and vertical forces.

In the due north of Beijing, where the plain and the low-mountain area meet, lies a tranquil, picturesque land surrounded by luxuriant forests. Known as a “peaceful wonderland in northern Beijing,” it is where the China National Archives of Publications and Culture is located. The site, unbelievably, used to be an abandoned quarry. In April 2019, THAD received a design invitation for the China National Archives of Publications and Culture from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. A team led by Zhuang Weimin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, submitted a design proposal for the project. After three rounds of competitions with top design institutions and universities in China, THAD won. Following the development philosophy for the new era, Zhuang and his team carried out ecological rehabilitation on the abandoned quarry, restored the landscape of the site, and created an architectural complex that carries cultural features and integrates into the surroundings. After completion, the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, which has a gross floor area of 99,500 square meters, erects majestically at the foot of the Yan Mountains.

SOHO Wisdom Granary of Dingzha Watertown / line+ studio + MLA+

The core of the township revitalization lies not in the replacement of architecture and space, but in the elements that stimulate human vitality: jobs, residence, and the hustle and bustle. In Dingzha, we hope to build a new “urban and rural collaboration” model based on industry introduction and local circulation and combine pre-operation with spatial transformation to create a new hometown in the old town. – Peidong Zhu

Located at the border of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, Dingzha Town where water town SOHO is located has become a hollowed-out township after a one-way siphon of urban development elements. As the future “Zhejiang Model”, Dingzha hopes to be integrated into the testing ground of common prosperity with sustainable vitality among the development opportunities of the “Yangtze River Delta integration Demonstration Zone”. In exploring the path of bidirectional balance between urban and rural areas, the revitalization path with cultural tourism as the starting point has been developed successively by the East Gate and West Gate of Wuzhen, which has been widely recognized by academia, the market, and the public. But on the other hand, the vast territory is scattered with those ordinary towns that lack characteristics and recognition in terms of cultural context, natural landscape, and historical accumulation. In the face of these ordinary towns, we try to find a new path, integrating research, planning, and design, to carry out value cognition, space transformation, and content placement on the historical production remains of the town. With industrial renewal as the triggering point, it is hoped to promote the flow of production factors to the towns, and gradually realize the reconstruction of living and ecological scenes.

NIO Delivery Center / Kokaistudios

February 20, 2023 Collin Chen 0

At over 12,000 sqm, it is the brand’s largest and is located on the site of a former factory in Jiading district. As well as building a new and iconic facade, Kokaistudios’ renovation extended to creating welcoming, functional interiors for the facility’s ground floor public space. Dynamic, open, and with a strong focus on hospitality, the interiors are in keeping with a design template developed for NIO by Kokaistudios last year and debuted at NIO House in Jinan. In Shanghai, these elements combine to transform a previously unremarkable industrial site into an eye-catching brand beacon, all the while delivering on NIO’s user-first concept.

The site of the project is typical of a common high-rise office building, with its corner location on the floor providing plenty of natural light. The client required two counseling rooms, a lounge area, a big salon,a reception area, and an office. The challenge of the design is firstly how to organize such a variety of functions in a constrained site, while still keeping the space bright, uncluttered, and open; secondly is how to create a special atmosphere which suitable for Psychological Counselling, through simple materials and construction methods, given the limited cost.

A Garden / Fangwei Architect

February 15, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Gardening has always been a representation of people’s pursuit of the ideal living environment. This project closely follows the functions of Only Flower floral art studio’s creations and external displays by providing the necessary conditions for florists to create beauty. The interior and exterior spaces merge with each other and integrate organically with the landscape through a unified architectural language. In doing so, a serene and dreamlike “garden of flowers” is created. The flower — is a signifier of beauty and vitality. As a floral studio, we established this simple and beautiful little courtyard in Hongxing Guangyuan Industrial Park in Beijing’s Daxing District, where it was converted from an old factory building. A free-flowing curved glass-brick wall connects the interior and exterior with a cohesive architectural language that leads guests through the entranceway, where they may carry on into the interior, or linger in the courtyard to indulge in a moment of tranquility
