Charcoal House / Yellow Cloud Studio

Charcoal House is as a crisp, rectangular corner plot extension, clad with black timber, wrapped in glazing and set in a concrete landscape that highlights its sharp angles. The brief was to transform a dark, fragmented space into a bright kitchen/dining area, bringing natural light and garden views far into the house.

This adaptive re-use project transforms one of the most important cultural and historic landmarks in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, which has re-opened to the public in 2019 for the first time in 50 years. The Senate of Canada has relocated to the former Ottawa Union Station for the ten-year restoration of Centre Block on Parliament Hill. Previously the Government Conference Centre, this prominent Beaux-Arts structure (1912) is located in the heart of the city adjacent to the parliamentary precinct and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rideau Canal.

The proposal restores a refugee called “La Casa del Ángel” placed in la Sierra de Jumilla. This small construction has been the shelter of excursionists, hunters and mountaineers during many decades. Due to its relevance on its context, geographical as much as social, the refurbishment could not only be an architectonic action but also a landscape one.

Transforming the original 1960’s building into a “learning center” offers a new venue for student life, meeting and sharing on this Marseilles campus. The site is visually captivating, one of chiseled stone where the wild landscape of the Calanques penetrates into the university campus and offers a context conducive to reading and dreaming, with the heady odor of pine groves wafting about.

The project seeks to establish a new home for the Australian Islamic Mission and provide a complex of buildings to facilitate learning and religious worship for local community members that follow the Muslim faith. The development is to be constructed in two stages, with Stage 1 being the construction of the Mosque accommodating approximately 300 worshippers and Stage 2 being the construction of community buildings.

From the busy, unassuming, suburban street of Military Road the house reveals very little of itself. It presents as a protector of its inhabitants yet is gentle in its embrace, offering to the street delicate glimpses of its subtlety through carefully crafted openings. This house is private but it is welcoming. An entry sequence begins an unveiling of secrets. The path along one side widens to a double-height entry and a layered composition of windows—eyes looking out with purpose.

Higashimatsuyama House / Kohei Kudo & Associates

The client’s family has been living in the beautiful site surrounded by nature for generations for over 300 years. The client couple lived in the “main house” built two generations ago and an “annex” built by them, going back and forth between those two separate buildings. They wanted to have a new style of living so that they could have a space to invite their daughter’s family and grandchildren. I planned this extension and restoration to make it feasible for its rich heritage to pass on to the next generation while leaving their favorite “annex”.
