El Cabanyal, a Historic Borough which does not need presentation. It was born as humble fishermen village, where long barracas were built, one next to the other and parallel to the shore, taking advantage of the easter main wind. It was named Pueblo Nuevo de la Mar until it became part of Valencia at the end of XIX century. Although it happened 3 centuries ago, El Cabanyal still feels like a village.
The project involves the complete rehabbing of a flat in the southwest of Madrid. A young person decides to renovate the family home where he grew up and lived for many years to turn it into his new home and professional office. The project starts off with a review of memories, experiences and life lessons, to rethink the present and imagine a future for this new stage of life. The challenge lies in designing a space that facilitates, accelerates and accompanies this process; to devise a sort of home catalyst, located in the heart of a residential building in the neighborhood of Las Aguilas in the district of La Latina.
The construction of a semi-detached single-family home in the consolidated, protected urban environment of the El Viso area is resolved based on four concepts: Integrating the new single-family townhouse into its setting, while respecting the volume features of the two bays in the existing building and striving to blend the new building with its extension in with the neighbouring buildings through a thorough study of its volume and the scale of its openings.
Storefront for Art and Architecture’s narrow gallery space already takes advantage of its actively pedestrian neighborhood in SoHo, Manhattan. Its puzzle-piece-shaped facade openings (by Acconci/Holl 1993) connect this context with the gallery’s interior.
The Hamptons enjoys a storied past. Unique daylight and compelling landscapes have drawn artists to this part of Long Island’s South Fork for the last century and a half, and their work here includes an important body of modernist fine art and architecture. Yet more recently, the Hamptons’ allure has outsized its capacity—sprouting insensitive residential development, snarled traffic, and a national reputation for showing off.
The extension for the Weiden secondary school, housing a gymnasium and 24 classrooms, sits on the eastern part of the site between the existing secondary and primary school buildings.
Scarwafa (an acronym for the 6 owners) is a small-scale cohousing project of 3 befriended young families, who acquired three neighboring plots in the Buiksloterham area in Amsterdam, at the height of the last financial crisis. From the start, collectivity and simplicity were the guiding motives. The thin budgets demanded conservativeness in form and materialization. By developing a coherent, collective architectural language, there was an effectiveness in basic detailing and cost savings in implementation. With these basic details in hand, 3 individualized homes with different spatiality have been designed to fit the individual needs.
This project takes place in the urban planning of the Plateau de Saclay, along the public spaces chain, defined by XDGA and MDP. Within a coherent architecture, it links together the metropolitan scale of the site and a more intimism and domestic scale related to the dwellings.
Glorified in architecture forever, the humble tiger prawn becomes a two-pronged deity for this Fitzroy North, Melbourne renovation.
This house had to be built quickly and be efficient in the modulation of its structure to lower construction costs and speed up construction time.
