Águeda House / Espaço Objecto

The site. It was an intervention in an eclectic architecture building, dating from the beginning of the 20th century, classified by Águeda UMP (Urban Master Planning) as public interest property. This building,  located in Av. Dr. Joaquim de Melo, parish and municipality of Águeda, displayed a set of decorative elements in its facades, influenced by or with Art Deco references and, as it happens in other buildings of the same type, a higher element, tower- like stood out in its volumetry, which was positioned in the body of the building closest to the public street, only as decorative effect. Its integration into the urban grid plan, where this typology of isolated single-family dwelling predominates, and its visual relation and proximity to the public garden Conselheiro Conde de Sucena, assign an added value to this building, besides its historical particularities in the context of the early twenty-century Portuguese architecture.

At Wildernesse, the new pavilion restaurant forms the social heart of the scheme and is a contemporary counterpoint to the Grade II-listed country estate. Built from timber and with a dramatic sequence of vaulted ceilings, the restaurant offers a new shared dining space and gathering point for the estate and wider community. A strong visual connection is made to the impressive historic context and thriving landscape through carefully considered open plan arrangement and large glazed openings that connect inside and outside. The light filled internal spaces are accentuated by the central elevated lantern and richness of finishes that aim to reinstate the former pavilion typology to the estate.

The Coach House / Studio 30 Architects

May 4, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

A growing family refurbishes and extends their Victorian dwelling and coach house into a modern, light-filled family home. The budget demanded that a principle of practicality be applied to which period features to retain or modernise. One enters the house through the newly reinstated coach house doorway. By blocking the previous main door – now an external wood store – and with new sash windows, a clarity is brought to the previously confused street elevation. From the hallway, views through the existing house reveal the new airy open kitchen-dining space and the freshly landscaped garden beyond. By removing the wall dividing the dwelling and its adjoining coach house, the latter was amalgamated into the building’s main body, allowing for the reconfigured spaces to be as generous as the family requires. Towards the rear, large windows and roof-lights flood the heart of the house with natural light, with sliding-folding doors and a wide slot window in the kitchen further extending the internal spaces into the garden.
