Designed by international architecture and design firm NBBJ, Discovery Drive forms part of the second phase of Cambridge Biomedical Campus’ new globa The 100,000 sq ft laboratory and office facility is now home to over 450 Abcam staff, from all business functions – including R&D, laboratory, logistics, corporate and commercial departments.
The Commune is a collaborative work space designed to suit the needs of the creative community. Filled with thoughtful details and materials shaped by local fabricators, the space itself feels like a product of the hand. From the custom steel windows, doors and sliding partition systems to the cast-in-place concrete work surfaces and wooden slat wall, the architecture of the Commune represents the ethos of making.
URBANISM. As a compact two-storey building, the Kindergarten blends self-confidently into the heterogeneous surrounding. To the south, the entrance façade strengthens the character of the street space by adopting the existing building lines in the east. A generous green ramp in the north links the upper floor directly with the landscape of the Riedlepark.
Andyrahman Architect strives to fit its working flow with the craftsmen’s flexibility. In the Omah Boto project, craftsmen are invited to be a collaborative partner during the architectural process, so they can feel like a subject that determines the success or failure of the design on the field. They had to re-emerge their spirit as a ‘designer’.
The Lantern House extension is a project to re-energise the rear of a double storey Victorian house located in Melbourne’s quiet inner city suburbia. The extension replaced the original oversized alfresco with a traditional roofline design with an inviting and high functioning indoor and outdoor space that blends seamlessly into the main house and garden. The kitchen area was extended to create a new indoor dining space complete with a gas fireplace, which in turn flows into a reimagined outdoor lounge and kitchen area with a built-in BBQ, perfect for entertaining.
The project initially intended to be a small country house with a bedroom and a limited social area that would be used for weekends. The land where the house is implanted is very privileged, since it faces its visuals towards the valley of Tumbaco, therefore, the first condition of the project was to align all the spaces of the house to the east orientation, taking advantage of the visuals to the landscape of the Valley.
In this project, we seek to redefine the traditional housing of the state of Morelos, as a Porch-House with a large semi-open, roofed multi-functional space, surrounded by fruit trees and vegetation. The design pays respect to the local house type, raising and tilting the roof. The semi-open outdoor space and the foliage give quality and meaning to the private and social life of the community: all the activities are woven together in these spaces.
Interest in wide and deep roof. Without using the flowery words for the cult of shadow, the roof implies the connection between the story of light, rain and wind and our practical life. The house is related to our life. But if we focus on the practical side of it, it would be just a flattened, vulgar, simple plane.
Hawthorn Villa is a villa unit in a group of four, reconfigured to accommodate the owners needs for additional functions within the home and improved connections to its outdoor areas. Generous planning setbacks provide the street-facing home with a surprising large front garden for a unit. It also enjoys a more typical smaller rear courtyard that faces north. The design aims to use the living areas as a funnel between both of these outdoor spaces creating a home experience amongst garden.
Roseville Pavilions is an alterations and additions to a freestanding house in Sydney’s north. The project is a renovation to the existing house, with additional garden room and updated landscaping. The project site slopes down from the entry level to the garden by a whole floor. The brief called for a more seamless connection between the entry level – which contains main living, kitchen and dining spaces – to the low level rear garden.
