Harbor Wetland / Ayers Saint Gross

August 19, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The National Aquarium has an ambitious mission to inspire the conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures. With a prime location in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and a goal of transforming its campus into a Chesapeake Bay demonstration landscape, the aquarium worked with Ayers Saint Gross to produce a sustainable and high-performing floating wetland to expand the habitat on its campus. Opening in 2024 between Piers 3 and 4, the Harbor Wetland will open to the public as a free exhibit on the National Aquarium campus. The 10,000-square-foot habitat will allow visitors to immerse themselves in a salt marsh habitat like those that existed in this space hundreds of years ago.

This project in Llinars del Vallès involved designing and constructing a single-family house on a well-oriented plot but with compromised privacy. Through a simple design strategy and a bioclimatic approach, Casa LA offers a sheltered atmosphere for daily life, increasing the comfort of its inhabitants and reducing energy consumption. The house’s layout is organized around a central fireplace and four brick volumes. These compact ceramic boxes are strategically located at the ends of the house to accommodate the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Dalian Huanan MixC One Mall / Ippolito Fleitz Group

August 18, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The MixC One Mall, created for project developer CR Land, is in Dalian, a port city on the Bohai Gulf widely considered the romantic city of north-east China. The characteristic coastal landscape of the region, an identifying feature for the local population, became the leitmotif of the design. The 84,000 m² mall contains more than 260 stores and combines a superlative shopping experience with the concept of a social hub consistently developed around the user’s perspective. Among the mall’s visual highlights are its impressively large atrium voids that are flooded with natural light thanks to generous skylights. The individual levels are modeled in a variety of organic shapes around a central air space. The atriums are thus stacked and staggered upon each other, resembling the irregular projections of a rocky island. At the same time, visual relationships are created between the galleries on the different vertical levels, arousing curiosity and encouraging visitors to explore the space. Overall, the mall appears as a large-scale sculptural space that is clear and uncluttered, yet full of surprises.

The House of Dancing Screens / Spaces Architects @ka

August 17, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The House of Dancing Screens, as its name suggests, revolves around the beauty of the pivotal screens and their graceful interplay of function, form, and movement, creating an ever-changing dynamic concept that gives the house its distinctive character and name. These screens are not mere partitions but elegant elements that redefine the space around them. Crafted with precision, they revolve smoothly on their pivots, offering flexibility in how spaces are used and experienced. Their movement along the wind is reminiscent of a dance—fluid, purposeful, and rhythmic—allowing the house to adapt to the needs and privacy of its occupants at any given moment.

COOSH Boutique Store / Sivak+Partners Studio

August 17, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

COOSH is distinguished by its Scandinavian, minimalist style with accent details so we created a space that represents the same approach by not only being a comfortable store but also focusing a visitor’s attention on surfaces, materials, and nuances. As the brand tends to a Scandinavian minimalism and is restrained in the color palette we thought it would be cool to overthink the Scandinavian mold and go to the roots of Scandinavia with its warm furry materials contrasting with the cold environment.

The Chigorodó Educational Institution (I.E. While reflecting the community’s commitment to securing a future for their children, these buildings face numerous construction and technical issues, particularly related to the climate, making them unsuitable spaces for children’s learning and recreational activities.

Aesop Hangzhou / atelier suasua

Bridge and Stone – Hangzhou is characterized by its numerous bridges. The “Qiantang County Records” states: “The residents of Qiantang are densely populated, with bridges every hundred steps and ten paces, with tracks and bridges for passage.” In the Yuan Dynasty, Marco Polo wrote in his travelogue: “Traveling in Hangzhou, surrounded by various waters, there are twelve thousand stone bridges.” We interpreted such bridge structures as symbols of connection and communication, equality and breadth. With this theme in mind, the space is conceived as a bridge between the global brand and its Hangzhou context. When entering the space, the huge water sink in the center is a concrete manifestation of the concept. People can stroll or stop by “the bridge,” where the water is flowing from the tap and the rectangular stone slabs bridging it create a dynamic context for “connection.”
