Fugazzi is an Italo-New York-inspired bar and dining room that blurs the line between today and yesterday. That moment of déjà vu begs the question, have I been here before? An overnight institution where velvet, leather, marble, inlaid geometric scraps, and custom joinery shelves are layered to create a decadent and luxurious atmosphere designed to invoke a sense of nostalgia. 

The challenge was to create a wellness and mindfulness center based on the idea of community life at Serra da Estrela Nature Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark site and Portugal’s oldest and largest conservation area. The chosen property already included a number of preexisting buildings, which allowed developing the project despite the many constraints that limit any intervention in a conservation area.

The challenge was to create a wellness and mindfulness center based on the idea of community life at Serra da Estrela Nature Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark site and Portugal’s oldest and largest conservation area. Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) announced the winners of the 2022 edition. From a pool of 463 projects nominated for the 15th Award Cycle (2020-2022), the six winners show examples of architectural excellence in the fields of contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, historic preservation, reuse and area conservation, as well as landscape design and improvement of the environment. Two projects from India, one from Indonesia, Iran, Lebanon, and Senegal, will share the $1 million Award, one of the largest in architecture.
