Positioned on a peaceful street in the heart of Fitzroy, 231 Napier Street forms eleven exclusive apartments designed by the award-winning Melbourne architecture practice, Edition Office. Surrounded by culture and commerce, this quiet pocket is an understandably coveted spot, bordered by Gertrude, Smith, and Brunswick Streets just north of the city. Reflecting Milieu’s dedication to enhancing neighborhoods through design and Edition Office’s commitment to ambitious architecture, Napier Street has been designed with consideration for its surrounding buildings, marrying contemporary ideals with the history of the site and context.
In the context of industrialization, “handmade pottery” still has an irreplaceable appeal. “Craftsmanship” is at the heart of this school’s teaching, and “craftsmen’s workshop” is at the center of the campus. We have found a form for each function and let them in their place. The different forms of buildings create a rich outdoor space that distinguishes the campus from the school typology that is dominated by massive buildings. The Kangaroo Valley Outhouse is a bathroom in the bush which services a small cabin for overnight stays. The concept was to separate the bathroom from the cabin and mimic the experience of camping. The bathroom/outhouse is situated low on a hillside about 30m from the accommodation and accessed via a pathway through a dense landscape. It is a mirrored cube elevated above the existing ground and nestled in vegetation. The outhouse structure completely disappears during the day. It reflects the lush landscape and only the subtle lines of the cube’s edges are visually legible. When in the bathroom the walls are all glass and there is no impediment to the view of the surrounding landscape.

Present situation. The project is located in the Zhexi Reservoir, Anhua County, Hunan Province. The project was formerly a timber factory with a history of more than 60 years. In the past two decades, it was abandoned due to the decline of the timber company and became an idle facility in the countryside. In 2019, it was established by Anhua Meishan City Investment Group Co., Ltd. invested and transformed it into a supporting homestay along the lake ring of the Zhexi Reservoir Scenic Area. It hopes to revitalize the idle resources in rural areas through design and transformation, then promotes the revitalization of local villages and the development of tourism. The site consists of five vacant buildings, namely the office building (Building 1) of the original timber company, the restaurant (Building 2), the dormitory (Building 3 and 5), and the pigsty (Building 4). Due to the large construction area and limited cost, we intend to use the principles of low cost, minimal intervention, and making the best use of the situation to carry out renovation and utilization from the perspective of rational allocation of the renovation budget. According to the respective positional relationship, landscape conditions, and morphological characteristics of the five buildings, find their respective appropriate functional positioning.

The house is located in Playa Grande, Santa Cruz, in the pacific north of Costa Rica, in a Basal life zone with coastal influence, where temperatures are high, and the climate fluctuates between humidity and heavy rainfall in the rainy season and strong solar incidence in the dry season. This elongated structure is placed on the site from east to west, maximizing the cross ventilation and taking advantage of the shade of the existing Melina and Nancite trees, thus protecting the roof from direct solar radiation and giving freshness to the house, this roof works as a “big hat” with pronounced eaves supported by local teak beams.
