The site had as pre-existence a single-family residence of the 19th century, in a poor state of conservation and without architectural prominence. There was never any intention to maintain or restore the building, however, its high elevation stood out on the first visit to the site.

Marcinelle II School / OPEN ARCHITECTES + LT2A

The quality of the site is due to its location in the heart of a planted island. The buildings of the establishment are pavilions between which users can move freely. The poetry of this place is enhanced by beautiful trees that form axes or points of interest. However, the transition between the layout in the heart of the block and the street is currently poorly resolved. This project constitutes a solution that reconciles the opening to the heart of the school with the definition of a boundary on the street. The administrative building and the annexed premises are also an opportunity to offer a new image of the Athénée Royal Jules Destrée and to make the site safer.

Collective Housing Bel-Air / Deschenaux Architects

The project is located in Villars-sur-Glâne, in Fribourg’s surroundings. The quiet area is facing the countryside. Behind the road, the field is still cultivated, and the trees are still populated with birds, which give the place a feeling of the passing of time. Moreover, the site is close to the city center. This lucky situation demands an ambitious project to build apartment buildings for rental with high-quality materials and spaces while handling the budget. Architectural quality should not be reserved for the owners of their housing.

Located on a lush, previously undeveloped site in Playa Grande in the Dominican Republic, The Retreat House, designed by New York-based architecture studio Young Projects, sits at the cusp of a dense jungle on one side, and a pristine beach on the other. Known as “Casa Las Olas,” the 20,000-square-foot vacation home is designed to take advantage of both faces of the property, drawing inspiration from the rich natural landscape and the owners’ interest in hosting large groups of family and friends for retreats focused on wellness and creative exchange.
