Toon & Ina House / Atelier Vens Vanbelle

When Toon and Ina bought a monumental building in the center of Ghent, they were faced with a complex renovation project. The assignment: to make one contemporary family home from two connected historic buildings. The volumes have been preserved almost everywhere. However, a pure restoration was not on the agenda: in 600 years the building had already been renovated so much and changed its function so much that it was impossible to turn back the clock ‘authentically. The earliest sources mentioning this place date from the 14th century. The cellar with brick vaults is said to date from when a brewery was still located here. There used to be an alley next to the house that led to the second home. But the bulk of the building dates from 1640, when the port of Ghent was just behind it. Later still, there was a printing shop for playing cards and a music school on this spot.

It’s a very popular place to live: where life unfolds out on the street and Muenster gains something of a big-city feel. Yet living space is very limited in the densely developed urban district that used to be home to port workers. This is due in part to the low-rise building style but also to the sometimes very spacious layouts of the dwellings.

Nordés Observation Post / CESUGA School of Architecture + Sebastian Erazo + Stefano Pugliese

July 4, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

The Faculty of Architecture of CESUGA has completed an intensive wood design and build workshop, lead by architects Sebastian Erazo and Stefano Pugliese and coordinated by professor architects Javier Caride and Tomas Valente. The main goal was to promote the use of wood as a building material in the forestry region of Galicia, Spain, through education in design and construction techniques. The rocky coastline on the surroundings of Barrañan beach at the Arteixo Municipality area was chosen as an area that could support possible lightweight infrastructures which would mark and connect existing paths along the Atlantic coast. The workshop aimed to develop participants’ sensitivities to working with wood, by manually constructing a small habitable structure, which was developed in two main phases.

A home office in a loft

Our latest lookbook shines a light on residential loft conversions from Dezeen’s archive, including rooftop extensions on existing dwellings and apartments built in underused attics. Opening up the volume beneath the roof is a popular way of squeezing more space out of a dwelling or building. The new spaces often feature unusual geometries, which a

Nieuwe Herengracht / Hollandse Nieuwe

Hollandse Nieuwe was asked by APF International to draw up a plan to renovate the listed building on the Nieuwe Herengracht 103 and make it suitable for rental purposes. The double canal house was built around 1685. In 1751, it was radically altered and given its current rococo façade and interior. In the 19th century, some small changes were made. In 1909, a ballroom with a stage was built at the rear. The stage is located in the rear of Nieuwe Herengracht 105 (which has since become part of Nieuwe Herengracht 103). Parts of this 17th- or 18th-century rear house were preserved. During the period 1921-1984, the building was used as a convent, together with several neighboring buildings.

Spanning three generations, the clients are a joint family that grew up in the old city of Ahmedabad. They now wanted a new, modern house for the growing family. Although most of their neighbours were moving to newer neighbourhoods, our clients were sure they didn’t want to be uprooted. This made the architect’s role very clear – to build a modern house that embodied the old city’s spirit.
