Why Incorporate Moss Walls into Architecture

October 19, 2019 AEC Daily 0

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors. Spending that much time inside makes us feel disconnected from the outside world, affecting everything from our productivity to mental health. Not to mention physical health concerns ranging from poor circulation to airborne contaminants.

How Does Photovoltaic Energy Work?

October 15, 2019 Eduardo Souza 0

Once restricted to space stations and satellites, photovoltaics are now gaining popularity and becoming an increasingly viable option. Every day, the sun releases an enormous amount of energy, far more than the entire population consumes. Being that the sun is a sustainable, renewable, and inexhaustible source for generating electricity, not using it seems almost counter-intuitive, especially considering the social and environmental impacts of other forms of energy generation. But the technology to create electricity from the sun is by no means simple and still has some limitations, the most significant being price. The following article attempts to explain some basic concepts about this process, and to highlight important considerations for designing a solar energy system.

Fleet House / Stanton Williams

Urban repair. A sensitive addition to the Hampstead Conservation Area, Fleet House by Stanton Williams reinterprets the historic Hampstead Village boundary wall tradition into a contemporary domestic concept. The design originates from the idea of re-establishing the lost boundaries which once defined the site at the junction between Admiral’s Walk and an almost forgotten historic footpath, while realigning the house with the pavement in continuity with the tall garden wall of the adjacent Grade I listed Fenton House.

Cocoon House / nea studio

October 11, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

This LEED-certified home, located in Long Island, New York, is called Cocoon because its round walls form a Cocoon shape towards the northern and western neighbors. This rounded enclosed half of the house provides shelter and privacy. The other glass side of the house, facing south, takes in ocean breezes and open views. The cedar shingle cladding blends in with the architectural material palette of the historic neighborhood. By tuning in to given site conditions, and with the help of environmental technologies such as photovoltaic panels, the architectural design serves both the environment and wellbeing.

Which Materials are Easiest to Recycle?

October 8, 2019 Eduardo Souza 0

The construction industry is responsible for 75% of the consumption of earth’s natural resources. Stone, sand, iron, and many other finite resources are extracted in huge quantities to supply the markets. Additionally, construction sites themselves generate enormous quantities of waste, whether through construction, demolition, or remodeling. In Brazil, for example, construction waste can represent between 50% and 70% of the total mass of municipal solid waste [1]. This waste often ends up in landfills and dumps rather than being properly disposed of, overwhelming municipal sanitation systems and creating informal disposal sites.

Amangiri House / Juan Pablo Ortiz Arquitectos

A dash of air, heated by the sun and embraced by walls. There is a substantial sense of immobility in how the conformation of the house celebrates the characteristics of the place. The house is located at 3000 meters above sea level, on the eastern slope of the Subachoque hills. Its location has privileged and distant views over the valley and a close relationship with the mountain and its magnificent Andean forest. In this scenery, the house is arranged in such a way that its architecture intensifies the relations of its spaces with the mountain and the valley.

Dales Of Derby Hotel / Philip M Dingemanse

October 3, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

Located in the picturesque region of northeast Tasmania, Australia, Dales Of Derby is a place to stay next to the river on the edge of town. An introductory building to the small village of Derby, a gable roof suggests a link to the local mining, timber and farming history, calling to mind utilitarian tin miner accommodation, high country slab hut or tractor shed.
