Wij_land is a pioneering self-build collective united by the desire to live more sustainably in a close-knit community of diverse residents. Initiators Mireille and Daniël have gone above and beyond to turn their vision into a reality. They sought the expertise of Space&Matter and Common City for the design and process guidance, aiming to bring together a group of self-proclaimed ‘pragmatic idealists’ and guide them in realising their dream homes. The result is a climate-adaptive residential building by the water on Centrumeiland, Amsterdam, with 26 varied homes and five communal spaces.

History.  Courtyard B is a classic square courtyard in its typology. It delights the viewer with its precise ridge, eaves, and facade lines, its equally high parts of the building, and its hipped roof landscape all around. In its 200 years old history, the basic structure and external appearance of the courtyard have hardly changed. Functionally speaking, the former main house makes up the classic part of the courtyard facing north, clockwise followed by the cow and pig stall, the threshing floor, and finally, connecting the gateway with the former main house, a vault that closes the courtyard towards the residential wing.

Terra Comb Residential Building / A Threshold

The 70’ x 40’ plot is in a dense urban neighborhood facing a narrow South park. The primary residents are students and professionals. The density and narrow setbacks of the surrounding buildings resulted in sections that drew light from above. Interconnected volumes allow light to penetrate through the building. These volumes become internal courts that house common activities such as reading and dining while also forming pause points along the circulation of the building.

Everyday Architect & Design Studio is an architectural laboratory inspired by the vernacular and vibrant city of Bangkok. Founded by Chatchavan Suwansawat in 2020, the studio is located on the 2nd floor of an ordinary shophouse in the Old Town community. In parallel to architectural design, Chatchavan has extensively written about his encounters with diverse architectural and design elements found in different parts of Bangkok. His collection of essays titled “Architect-ure” (literally translated: Architect found) invites the readers to relook at key features of contemporary Thai architecture, presented all around yet often overlooked.
