Located at the edge of Miami in the Village of El Portal sits the newly completed Skatebird Skatepark, a large open-air urban space that exists as a skatepark, event space, and place for the arts. At approximately 38,000 square feet, the skatepark consists of three parts: the skateable terrain, the enclosing walls, and the large roof that covers half the site, providing a dry and shady spot for visitors to escape harsh sunlight, as well as sporadic rainfall.
Many traditional sports typically operate within a set of rules on a regulated ‘court’. Skateboarding is different, it can be done anywhere with a hard surface, skateboarders often interpret the urban environment in creative and unique ways which are personal, stylistic, and technical.
A street battle is over. Hard infrastructure turned soft – from central parking to central park. Sandwiched between two contexts of the (car-based) oil host city of Sandnes, Ruten park is framed by the elevated train tracks and a large shopping mall. The former parking lot provided a central and generous open space protected only by its capacity of cars. RUTEN has remained a buffer in the urban development in anticipation of something bigger – as the Central Park in New York was built before the Manhattan grid was condensed around it.
The intervention carried out is located on a plot included within the delimitation of the site of cultural interest of the historical complex of Sant Francesc Xavier and in the surroundings of the Sa Tanca Vella chapel, the oldest on the island and declared an asset of cultural interest in the monument category in 1993. Although the intervention carried out is limited to the implementation of different sports uses, the initially developed arrangement covered a larger area, with the introduction of cultural uses such as the open-air auditorium, the arrangement of the surroundings near the Sa Tanca Vella chapel, and the reorganization of the existing urban gardens on the plot.
In 2019 the Mexican Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development through the Urban Improvement Program chose Ciudad Juarez as one of the sixteen cities with marginalized neighborhoods to build public spaces to improve the quality of life of their inhabitants. In an area of high marginalization to the east of the city, the Tierra Nueva neighborhood, characterized by being a housing area provided by the state, where a community of migrants coexists who come to this city in search of a better job in the local industry. In this context, Parque Oriente, a municipal park, is the meeting point that provides the necessary space for the development of sporting and recreational activities, family integration, contact with nature, with facilities to serve more than 5000 visitors. Thus, this space becomes the place of attraction for children, adolescents, and young people from surrounding neighborhoods in search of fun and physical activation.
For 10 years now, MBL architectes has been working on the progressive transformation of a former industrial mill in Boissy-le-Châtel, France, into a contemporary art venue for Galleria Continua. Started in 2013, the project aims to maintain and preserve the industrial wasteland, typical of the site. Residues of fallen down constructions, underlined by the presence of horticultural plants and the development of wild endemic species, merge and grow alongside the diversity of industrial buildings.
Since the collapse of communism thirty years ago, Warsaw’s hyper-centre has become a testing ground for all sorts of rapidly expanding corporate architectures. At the same time, public space seems to have been frozen and barely evolved in its monumental scale and socialist form. It is only recently that a series of new public investments intends to bring new programs to the city centre, igniting the potential to activate and inhabit it.
Skatepark and parkour ground are located in Mziuri Park – one of the central green areas of Tbilisi. “Mziuri – the city of children” is the original name of the theme park built in the 1980s. The park was based on the stories of a Georgian writer Nodar Dumbadze, who once went to Disneyland, got inspired, and decided to build a park for Georgian kids. The park is located between two neighbour districts so it also functions as a passage between them. This is the place where kids bond, make new friends and grow; it’s a “ghetto Disneyland” on a post-soviet land.
Danish architecture and design practices CEBRA and Glifberg+Lykke have designed a multi park and cultural centre for street sports on the harbour front of Haderslev in southern Denmark. StreetDome is a vast and unique urban landscape for activity and recreation including a 4.500 square metre skate park, facilities street basket, parkour, boulder climbing, canoe polo etc.
Creating a skate-spot under the skyway was a part of reconstruction plan of a Garden Ring (a circular avenue around central Moscow). Before the reconstruction, this place under the skyway was used as a parking lot. Thus, it was quite abandoned and featureless. The place is located close to the metro station and a central park, which made it perfect for transforming it into a skate-spot. Now, this public space is a part of Moscow’s social life and a new point of attraction for young people.
