First inspections revealed a ruin typical of the area, used mainly for livestock and seasonal hay – a precarious structure, reserved for unexpected discoveries. A large stone arch and an ancient fireplace emerge, suggesting that before being used as a stable, it served as a residence. In addition, the presence of a sort of Tholos outside, less typical of the area, gives the complex more connotations.

Started as the restoration of an old villa, the project aims to enhance the quality of the ground floor by reconnecting it to the garden. The major intervention focuses on the creation of a new plinth to magnify the presence of the villa in the middle of the garden meanwhile the bel-etage, the previous living room, is converted into a parental suite. Taking advantage of the existing semi-buried cellar, its reconversion is intended to reconnect living spaces to the garden.

Maarschalk Gerardstraat 5 Studios / Eagles of Architecture

June 30, 2021 Valeria Silva 0

On Maarschalk Gerardstraat in Antwerp, Eagles of Architecture subdivided a large nineteenth-century house into studios. The façade was painted a uniform white, and the interior of the porte-cochère and its two classical columns were given the same treatment. The passage was obstructed by a third hollow column covered with pink plasterboard, the standard finishing for a pipe duct. The combination of a classical column with a pipe duct comes across as a laconic gesture comparable to Le Corbusier’s exclamation, ‘Pour Ledoux, c’était facile – pas de tubes’ (For Ledoux, it was easy – no tubes). But if the confrontation with the townhouse is in itself already a contest, then Eagles of Architecture lets its opponent have the choice of weapons.

This project consists of the restoration of a traditional French farmhouse from the Perch region and the transformation of the barn located nearby. The owners are a family with six children who wanted to create a warm and comfortable space for family gatherings on weekends and during holidays. We asked ourselves not only how we can solve this practical challenge but also reflected best to connect the two structures.

Constructed in 1927 by the civil engineer V. Patek, the original “Telephone Exchange” building at Number 5 Bakuniskaya Street is a classic example of Russian industrial constructivism. It is one of three identical buildings in Moscow. The four-story, T-shaped structure has not been used since digital telecommunications were introduced in the city and has been falling into decay for two decades.

ADR architectural studio has been participating in the gradual renovation of the Broumov Monastery over a long period of time. Respecting the masterpiece created by the builders of the monastery, the studio’s projects strive to thoughtfully connect to the work of baroque architects like Christoph Dientzenhofer and his son Kilian Ignaz. Following extensive adjustments in the monastery gardens, which included a project developing the multifunctional civic centre Dřevník (woodshed), the studio has also designed several other buildings in the complex. From the Café Dietzenhofer, to the revitalisation of the Růžový dvůr (the rose yard), a new visitor centre, and, primarily, the U Tří růží (Three Roses) restaurant in the south wing of the complex.

The project revitalises an assemblage of 300-year old almshouses and gardens, consolidating the historic building with contemporary elements to create a sustainable and engaging public space. Wright & Wright’s remodelling creates 80% more exhibition space, 50% more public space and remedies the building’s deterioration, preserving a valuable local and national heritage asset for decades to come. It also introduces a new entrance directly opposite Hoxton Station, adds two new garden pavilions together with a street-facing cafe, and improves public access, with no increase in the building’s overall energy requirements.
