“Oyane-San” Shikoku Mura Entrance / kousou

February 12, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

On the northern tip of Shikoku Island, surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea, is Mt. Yashima, a peninsula with historical significance for Japan. This scenic locale hosts Shikoku Mura, a leading open-air architectural museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing traditional houses from the Shikoku region. Our challenge was to redesign its entrance, transforming it into a new focal point complete with information spaces, ticketing, restrooms, and a shop—all while symbolizing renewal. The site was a parking lot elevated above the main access road, loosely connecting a shrine to the east, the museum’s udon restaurant within a traditional house (Waraya) to the south, and an old Western-style house (Ijinkan) to the west. To the north, leading the visitor deep into the museum grounds, is Nagarezaka, a stone road by sculptor Masayuki Nagare.

The Campsite Hotel In The Bamboo Forest / Verse Design

February 11, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The project site is located in Hengxi Town, Yinzhou District, Ningbo. To the west and south of the site are thousands of acres of rice fields operated by the Puluo Farm. To the east and north are hilly terrains with bamboo forests. The eastern mountainous area is planned for a hotel campsite, with tents nestled among the bamboo forests. On the western slope, the original agricultural warehouse location is designed as the public area of the campsite hotel. The grouping is oriented towards the fields, with the bamboo forest at its back, creating a complementary scene with the camp on the eastern side.

Mindszentyneum Visitor Center / TSPC & Konkrét Stúdió

February 5, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

When planning the Mindszentyneum, the goal from the beginning was to create an open, inclusive building, that continues the socially sensitive approach to urban development, which was left to us by the ancestors of the city, including the namesake József Mindszenty, the later Archbishop of Esztergom. Behind the structure that falls on the facade as a strict veil, open spaces both horizontally and vertically welcome the visitor and create a connection between the disjointed neighborhoods, building parts, and functions.

The learning center at Quest is located on a 540 sqm piece of land, about 300 m from the seafront in Besant Nagar, Chennai. It is a learning center for children ages 8 to 16 years old. The center acts as a learning and interaction space for largely home-schooled children or those with the ‘unschooling’ pattern of education, which involves teaching children based on their interests rather than a set curriculum.

Tabloo Visitor Center / Bovenbouw

Bovenbouw Architectuur and ono architectuur designed a communication center for the storage of low and medium-level radioactive waste in Dessel, Belgium. To remain relevant throughout the 300-year process required to decrease the radioactivity, the building must be able to adapt to unforeseeable changes over the centuries. Aiming for dialogue and opportunities to play the widest possible role, we proposed a building consisting of two parts; an imposing structure that floats like a table more than 12m above the ground in which exhibition spaces are located, and an airy infill below that accommodates the multifaceted program of spaces, halls and offices.

The Lantern in the Paddy Field / HDEC AIR-CoLAB Studio

October 31, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

Preface – As the most iconic structure of the “Ten Thousand Mu of Square Fields” project in Xiwu Street, Fenghua District in Ningbo, The Lantern in the paddy field has provided a new scenic viewpoint and social hub for the local countryside. The tower stands at a height of 23 meters and is located in the central area of the national modern agricultural demonstration zone with high-standard farmland. It spirals up from the rice fields like a sculpture, with triangular elements and white membranes defining its clean design language, giving it a strong presence on the rural land.

Typeless is based on Hormuz Island in the Persian Gulf, South of Iran. It is a two-story platform for educational initiatives, with a building spatially adaptable to future alterations. Iran has a long history of using on-hand or discarded materials to create useful and even valuable products, such as carpet. Carpet-makers take an ordinary raw material like wool, color it with plant residues, and using creative designs and crafts, they turn it into the invaluable object that is carpet.
