Use of the status quo/ Cope with structure. There were existing foundations and basements on the site when FCJZ received the commission to redesign the buildings from the ground up. We transformed the previous 9m square-column grid into a concrete structural system that places columns at 4.5m intervals and spans 28-32m. ST International HQ and SONGEUN Art Space / Herzog & de Meuron

October 15, 2021 Paula Pintos 0

A new home for SONGEUN and the people of Seoul. The new ST SONGEUN Building houses art spaces for the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation – a non-profit organization established in 1989 – together with headquarter offices for ST International. Our experience designing contemporary museums increasingly focuses on how we can bring art and people together. How can we make a space that works for the art and the artist, for the curator and the public? When Herzog & de Meuron was commissioned to design the new SONGEUN Art Space in 2016, the ambition was clear: to create a cultural anchor that invites the public and broadens the exposure of Korean artists to the international contemporary art scene. By offering non-commercial art spaces within one of the most commercial areas of Seoul, the project aims to strengthen SONGEUN’s presence and significantly contribute to the city’s cultural topography and diversity.

The first intervention of the Cerro Blanco Protected Forest master plan faces the visitors to the forest magnitude. The design promotes the collective experience of being sitting in the front row. The end of the main axis lets the guide or the teacher the best location to address the audience spread in the two lateral wings. With this action, the viewpoint works as an open classroom for the school groups that visit the forest, which represents the largest park visitors.

S.A.L.T House Visitors Center / S.E.E.D haus

August 26, 2021 Valeria Silva 0

S.A.L.T house stands for space for Air, Light, Tree. This project is designed to reinterpret the meaning of the sentence, “A room (or an architectural space) is not a room without natural light” in 『Louis I. Kahn — Light and Space』. Namely, the light lights up a space and the internal mood is created by the intensity of light. Therefore, the light provides meaning to the place.
